OBELIX

This research proposal aims at exploring the quantum states of matter that can be realised in semiconductors. Particularly, we address Bose-Einstein condensation which constitutes a milestone in the quest for exotic collective quantum states. This ambitious goal will be pursued by employing unique physical properties of spatially indirect excitons confined in quantum well heterostructures. Indirect excitons are boson-like quasi-particles which exhibit a very long lifetime, well-defined spin structure and electric dipole, and thus can form ultra-cold gases at thermodynamic equilibrium. Our approach relies on different material systems and on modern nanofabrication techniques to create exciton traps. Thus, we aim at scrutinising quantitatively exciton collective states, including the spin degree of freedom in multi-component condensates.
