The CADENA project focuses on optimizing the chemically assisted graphitization of detonation nanodiamonds (NDs) to use them as catalysts in selective gas-phase fluorination reactions with HF. This project addresses the growing demand for fluorinated molecules, which are essential in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and Li-ion battery sectors. Traditional industrial methods, although effective, pose significant environmental risks due to the use of toxic organic solvents and non-recyclable reagents. CADENA aims to overcome these challenges by leveraging the unique properties of nanodiamonds, whose modified surface can maximize catalytic activity while minimizing environmental impacts. Preliminary results show that NDs, purified by chlorine and fluorine thermal treatments, offer increased thermal stability and enhanced catalytic properties. DFT modeling is used to identify the active catalytic sites, while the chemically assisted reconstruction of ND surfaces creates well-ordered sp2 carbon layers, further improving their efficiency. The project also includes studies on industrial scalability and a techno-economic assessment to ensure large-scale production of these catalysts, while reducing health and environmental risks. The CADENA consortium brings together complementary partners: ICCF provides expertise in fluorine chemistry; IJL specializes in carbon nanomaterials; IMN excels in DFT modeling; IC2MP is recognized for catalyzed fluorination. Finally, Syensqo ensures industrial implementation. This synergy between partners guarantees a comprehensive approach, from fundamental research to industrial application, to meet the technical and environmental challenges of the project.
