The LIN’ACTIVE project expands knowledge on flax bioactives, specifically mucilages and lignans, which are known for their health benefits in both humans and animals as natural alternatives to energy-intensive chemical additives. To maximize bioactive content, the project investigates the variability of mucilages and lignans across different flax varieties and production conditions in France. In collaboration with seed breeders and farmers, we will identify the optimal varieties and cultivation conditions that influence the quality and quantity of these compounds in oilseed flax. We will evaluate eco-friendly processes for separation, extraction, and stabilization, using technologies that reduce energy and solvent consumption while concentrating bioactive compounds and preserving their integrity. The functional properties of mucilages (viscosity, water retention, emulsification) and lignans (antioxidant activity) will be analyzed to facilitate their incorporation into food matrices, offering natural alternatives to synthetic additives. The health impact of flax bioactives will be assessed through animal model studies, examining their effects on metabolic and inflammatory diseases as well as mental health, to better understand their interactions with the gut microbiota and overall health. A sustainability analysis will evaluate the environmental impacts of these bioactive ingredients through Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), integrating project-specific data. In parallel, an economic evaluation will assess the financial viability of flax bioactives by analyzing production, extraction, and processing costs, as well as their market potential. By combining optimized seed production conditions, eco-friendly processing methods, and validated functional and health benefits, LIN’ACTIVE will generate new knowledge to develop healthy and sustainable food products, supporting the diversification of agricultural practices and reducing environmental impact.
