Metabolic abnormalities and cardiovascular remodelling have been recognized as risk factors for CVD but we still know little how these processes influence each other. Among metabolic processes, glutaminolysis has emerged as an important energetic source supporting many functions of cells of the cardiovascular system. Glutamine utilization is increased in atherosclerotic plaques and systemic glutamine levels is maintained by peripheral tissues. Here, we propose to test how glutamine metabolism shapes abnormal cardiovascular remodelling and cardiac homeostasis. We will also investigate therapeutic opportunities of modulating glutamine metabolism in cardiovascular complications. Our project will contribute to deciphering the causal association between Gln metabolism, cardiovascular remodelling and CVD and subsequently to identify novel CVD therapeutic benefits beyond traditional risk factors.
