Hydrogen is expected to become one of the main energy carriers in the coming decades. The present project focuses on the development of novel thin film membranes allowing for the efficient purification of H2 at different temperature ranges. The novel strategy proposes the coating of industrially relevant tubular porous ceramic substrates with highly conformal thin films of three different nanomaterials – Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), Palladium and barium zirconate (BZY) – aiming to their future industrial use at low, medium and high temperature, respectively. For the synthesis of the nanomaterials, novel “conventional” and “spatial” atomic layer deposition (ALD) processes will be used. The project is expected to lead to many scientific results in terms of publications and patents, and the thin films deposition of the three materials in a continuous and conformal manner onto tubular substrates will represent a real breakthrough, matching an industrial and pressing need.
