The MECASOFT project proposes the development of contact mechanics models and innovative instrumentations based on an atomic force microscope and micro/nano indenters, as well as original experimental protocols, to characterize locally the mechanical properties of materials or thin films with low moduli of elasticity (Young's modulus between kPa and MPa). A finite element simulation approach will be used to derive simple analytical expressions, along with experimental validation. These simulations will take into account the effects of surface tension and adhesion at a nano/micrometer scales. On the experimental side, it should allow to rigorously determine the initial indentation depth. Ultimately, the exploration of hitherto inaccessible properties (due to lack of suitable models) of biological systems or for the study of durability or ageing of polymer microparticles should make major new contributions to our understanding of the mechanisms involved.
