Sleep is a one of the fundamental and essential behavior shared by all species. To truly understand sleep, its long-term response to environmental disruptions, its flexibility, it is imperative to continue studying it with a multimodal approach (behavior, physiology and cerebral signal), in particular by recording electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), activity and body temperature. In this project, our objective is to pioneer the development of a cutting-edge technology centered around implantable flexible and wireless electrodes and electronics. Our aim is to enable the continuous collection of electrophysiological (EEG) parameters from animal subjects as they move freely. The proposal's objectives are as following: 1) fabrication of an implantable sensor onto flexible and ultralightweight substrate in order to facilitate integration and diminish immune response. 2) Data and energy transmission through a layer of skin by using RF / waves approach. 3) Energy transfer through skin by optical approach. 4) Integration of the new kind of implantable sensor into animals for sleep study. The final system will mainly include two parts. One will be implanted under the skin; and will wirelessly communicate with a second one: an external receiver located onto the animal. Signals recorded will be EEG and animal activity. Understanding the biology of sleep in animals is crucial for gaining insights into fundamental principles like sleep regulation, leading to potential applications for human health and medicine.
