Description
Cancer in general and particularly its drug resistance pose a continuously rising threat to the global health. Based on the COST Action CM1106 “Chemical Approaches to Targeting Drug Resistance in Cancer Stem Cells” which acts as incubator, we assembled a network (TranStem) of 9 beneficiaries teams from 7 EU member states, encompassing both academic and non-academic sectors and different disciplines, to form a consortium committed to training Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in the discovery and preclinical validation of novel drugs and targets in cancer stem cells (CSCs - the source of cancer cells). The main aim of the consortium is to provide a training network where students are exposed to every aspects of drug discovery process in CSCs, ranging from target identification and validation, through organic synthesis, in silico design and compound screening; to mode-of-action and resistance mechanisms. This will be accomplished through a concrete ESRs secondment plan, coupled with a series of high-level consortium-wide training events and network programs. The training framework is built on an innovative research project that aims to develop a chemical-biological toolbox and new cancer treatment methods that specifically target cancer stem cells to overcome drug-resistance. The presence of two non-academic beneficiaries and six academic partners adds significant value to the proposal by providing a solid link between basic research, translational research, innovation and the productive world in EU (scientific progress for economic growth). This will allow us not only to shape the research and training format of the project towards an industry-oriented pre competitive approach, but also to contribute significantly to the ‘employability’ of the TranStemers (ESRs) and provide valuable and lifelong career Networking opportunities. The proposed scientific projects have a trans disciplinary, collaborative, and intersectoral scope, laying the groundwork to position TransStem as the CSCs research and training hub for Europe.
