After many years of continuous improvement at the international level, the precision of MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) type gyros has been capped at a few ° / h for several years. Work has recently been launched in France to study ways of improvements (IMEMS NG project at the DGA, NExt4MEMS project supported by the BPI) with the performance objective of sub ° / h stabilities. For the highest performances (between 0.01 ° / h and 0.1 ° h), it appears necessary to identify and implement new concepts, breaking with the existing ones. Improving this performance to reach the navigation class would make it possible to address applications reserved for optical (FOG and RLG) or mechanical (GRH) rate monitors that are much larger and more expensive. ONERA has recently identified a gyroscope concept that is completely out of date with the state of the art and capable of meeting the performance objective of the navigation class (<0.1 ° / h). Two patents are being drafted and we are proposing as part of this study to evaluate and validate the performance potential of this new concept. The TRL of this gyroscope is at the start of the project at 2 and the goal is to reach the TRL 4 at the end of the project. To achieve this objective, ONERA's expertise in the design of inertial MEMS sensors will be used, as well as that of C2N on techniques for producing and characterizing MEMS resonators, of GEEPS on innovative techniques for processing signal associated with these resonant sensors, the IEMN on innovative actuation and detection techniques, and the VMICRO PME to make manufacturing processes robust. The work of two AID / ONERA theses started in 2020 will support this project.
