New water management strategies will have to be carried out, accompanied by sanitary real-time monitoring of water resources, in particular for the selective and sensitive detection of pathogens (e.g. bacteria in irrigation waters). Among the existing methods, Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPRI) biosensors are promising candidates, in particular as portable devices. Such biosensors are widely used for industrial and environmental process monitoring and achieve high specificity by using molecular ligands to capture their targets. The limitation on response dynamics is the time to capture enough targets to generate a signal (several hours at low concentrations). E-field based active transport (DEP & ACEO) can be very effective for sensitive and rapid detection. We propose to develop a fully configurable, fast dynamic and low threshold SPRI-DEP-ACEO system for label-free biodetection of pathogenic bacteria, especially of plants such as the Dickeya genus responsible for heavy financial losses for farmers every year.
