The L-Spirits project aims at providing a fundamental understanding of strong and short shock waves in textured material. It remains unexplored at the microstructure grain scale while the associated fatigue performances are dramatically related to the grain boundaries residual stress. Project is related to Laser shock Peening process consisting in reinforcing surfaces by producing compressive residual stresses using laser-plasma generated shock. Objectives are (a) Drive technologies to LSP as a disruptive solution, (b) uild an European platform for Laser Shock Peening development (c) Develop a numerical twin. Scientific issues and challenges adressed by the project are : 1. The full modeling and numerical simulation of shock wave propagation and relaxation of textured material. 2. tracking for the first time at high-spatial and temporal resolutions the shock wave produced by LSP in textured material, To do so, an important part of the project is dedicated to design and perform in-situ (time and spatially resolved) experiments for investigating high-dynamic processes in engineering materials. 3. the production of well-controlled/characterized textured material We will benefit from the recent developments at synchrotron and XFEL facilities. This unprecedented effort will be coupled to upfront micromechanical simulations to predict the shock-wave propagation for different microstructure conditions. It will be the basis for further development of simulation and modeling approaches to establish digital twins for LSP material processing. Project includes 5 workpackages : 1. Samples, specifications, manufacturing, material characterisation and LS optimisation and treatments ; 2. Modeling & simulation: from micro to macroscale 3. Development of numerical methods for microscale simulations 3. 4D (sub-)microscopic characterisation of materials after LSP treatment (ex-situ measurements), 5. In-situ time-resolved shock wave propagation and residual stress generation. The planned research will be accomplished within the frame of 4 PhDs projects shared between french and german partners. L-Spirits gathers among best academic EU groups in the scope of related research on LSP : Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, Leuphana University Lüneburg, PIMM & I2M Laboratories. To guide and respond to application challenges, the consortium will rely on a scientific council bringing together researchers from around the world and industrialists.
