SimBI

The ANR PRCE SimBI project aims to reconstruct accurate images obtained by experimental techniques from numerical flow simulation databases using linear and non-linear optical equations. This area of investigation has a vast field of application, and the SimBI project is a first step that will focus on producing images of two-phase flows and, in particular, on the representation of the liquid-gas interfaces. The equations governing optics are well known and have been studied to propose new diagnostics or to interpret experimental images. They are howeverer sparsely used to build images from flow simulations, mainly because interactions such as those between light rays and complex morphology interfaces are very complex to calculate. As a result, highly simplified models have been proposed for image reconstruction based on simulations, and mainly to obtain a natural rendering for video games, for example. The Accurate reconstruction of optical diagnostic images, even if it is more complex, has several objectives: better comparisons between experiments and simulations; better interpretations of experimental images/techniques since the flow is completely known in numerical simulations; enhancement of information extracted from experimental images, that is currently not used or eliminated because considered as biases; the possibility of producing mixed experiment-simulation databases opening up the possibility of interpretations by deep learning techniques. To carry out this project, a partnership has been proposed between teams expert in fluid simulations, optical diagnostics, and optical simulations, as well as Kitware, a leader in high-performance calculation and post-processing codes such as Paraview. The integration into this open-source software platform, which is present in most national and international computing centers, will ensure that the results of this ANR PRCE SimBI project are widely disseminated.
