REVELATION

The need for increasingly sophisticated materials in both civil (aeronautics, transport, construction, medicine, etc.) and military (smart textiles, human protection, stealth, etc.) applications is a challenge for our society. In particular, nanocomposite materials, i.e. composed of a matrix with sub-micrometric components such as nanoparticles (NP) are generating multifunctional surfaces that opens up promising solutions in these fields of application. These properties are directly related to the type, concentration, size, shape and distribution of NPs combined with the physicochemical characteristics of the matrix and the interfaces NP / matrix. However, although promising, the use of NP in coating processes encounters many technological bottlenecks. It requires integrating, in particular in their large-scale development, safety and environmental impact considerations. The implementation of multifunctional coatings therefore requires the development of innovative methods that respect people and the environment. The REVELATION project aims to respond to these challenges by focusing on: - the development of an innovative alternative for the manufacture of multifunctional nanocomposite coatings using a process coupling the method of reactor-injector of NP with a cold plasma at low pressure. This process, patented by the academic partners, appears as an alternative to current solutions which do not achieve sufficient control of the dispersion of NPs in the matrix to achieve the targeted properties of the coatings. - the preparation of DLC coatings containing metal oxide or chalcogenide NPs. The project aims to implant these NP synthesis pathways in the reactor-injector of NP. - the implementation of the process for tribological coating on one target piece with dual civil and military application. The REVELATION project proposes to develop new coating on new experimental set-ups in the platform Irving. The latter, common to the 3 academic partners, brings together chemists and physicists that aim to establish a disruptive and generic technology of surface coatings with durable multifunctional properties. The REVELATION project, proposed over a period of 3 years, involves 5 partners representing industry and academic research organization. They present complementary skills and experimental capacities covering all aspects required for the project.
