The aim of project PHILAT is to build up a lexicon of the words and notions of the Latin philosophical vocabulary and of the corresponding Greek terms in order to show how the Greek philosophical notions have been translated and acclimated in Rome, in philosophical texts as well as in other aspects of Latin literature. The heart of the project will be an on-line lexicon in open access, that will allow dynamical research following different modes of interrogation and indexation (chronology, schools, literary genres, …). The lexicon will be completed by textual analysis, in order to evaluate the distance between the original notions and their transposition. The project intends to test the hypothesis of the translatability of the philosophical vocabulary from one language into another through its first historical attempt, the passage from Greek to Latin, and aims to understand how this attempt managed to create a new lexicon, to initiate a process of cultural transfer and to transform in return the source culture.
