RIANA

Risks in the society are becoming more complex and interconnected as a result of issues like climate change, population aging and technological development. In this ever-changing environment, the insurance can create value for society by offering protection to the people through the provision of risk sharing, risk transfer abilities, and loss prevention measures. These activities are inherent in the insurance business model and fundamental for a well-functioning economy. Nowadays, insurance companies have to cope with an overwhelming abundance of data (e.g. telematics data), a customer relationship becoming more and more monitored (respectful of the data privacy and ensuring inclusion and gender equality), the evolution of the regulation and accounting rules (e.g. IFRS17) and the emergence of new technologies (e.g. the blockchain technology). The RIANA (Risk ANalytics and Actuarial mathematics for a fair and inclusive society) project aims at training a new generation of quantitative risk analysts who will be able to carry out applied mathematics and interdisciplinary research to help the overall society become more resilient to these interconnected risks. The research projects conducted within RIANA will also inspire European Union decision makers to design new governance rules with respect to the use of data, fairness, inclusion and risk mitigation within insurance operations. The 15 ESRs will benefit from the expertise of their academic supervisors in applied probability, data science, actuarial science, accounting, economics, computer science and marketing. They will gain professional experience and exposure while completing their internships at our industry partners that range from small start-ups to world largest reinsurance companies. The ESRs will also develop “transversal skills”, like communication, dissemination of scientific results and public engagement, which are designed to promote outstanding research and diffusion of innovation in Europe.
