ENZYL-COAT

The EnzyL-Coat project aims to address a major challenge in the circular bioeconomy: the underutilization of lignin, a byproduct of lignocellulosic biomass representing up to 30% of total biomass. The primary objective is to develop lignin-based biodegradable seed coatings through enzymatic modification, providing a sustainable alternative to synthetic polymers currently used in agriculture. The project focuses on harnessing recent advances in laccase-mediated enzymatic systems to tailor lignin's complex structure. These reactions allow for the customization of lignin properties under milder and more environmentally friendly conditions compared to conventional chemical methods. EnzyL-Coat will develop enzymatic tools and coating formulations across several types of commercial lignins, then apply these insights to underutilized plant co-products provided by Cérience, the project's private partner. The project aims to optimize these enzymatic systems to transform the underutilized co-products into functional materials suitable for seed coating applications. The coatings will be designed to enhance key agronomic properties such as water retention, adhesion, controlled release of bioactive compounds, promotion of seed germination and plant growth, as well as reduction of dust during handling and sowing. EnzyL-Coat will also integrate beneficial microorganisms into the lignin-based coatings and incorporate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies to evaluate the environmental impact of the developed seed coatings throughout their life cycle. The project seeks to contribute to a more sustainable and efficient agricultural system by reducing reliance on petroleum-based materials and supporting the circular bioeconomy. The targeted technological and scientific innovations align closely with both national and European priorities for sustainable agricultural practices and the valorization of biomass residues.
