The presence of numerous chemical and microbiological contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, including toxic (e.g. endocrine disruptors) and/or persistent contaminants such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, metals, can lead to a significant degradation of the ecological status of natural waters and increase human and animal exposures to these contaminants through drinking water, crop irrigation or recreational uses; they may also trigger a rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes and bacterial pathogens in hydrosystems. The sources of contaminants in these hydrosystems are numerous. These include the transport of contaminants associated with runoff and erosion from permeable land and impervious surfaces, point source discharges from storm water outflows, wastewater treatment plants and industrial emissions. In this ANR project, we plan to assess river contamination sources and predict water quality trajectories using an interdisciplinary approach as illustrated in Figure 1. We propose to test the hypothesis of strong relationships between (i) land-use and anthropogenic activities, (ii) co-occurrence of dissolved chemical and microbiological contaminants, and (iii) hydrological processes and water pathways in a watershed. Furthermore, we assume that these correlation networks can be used to implement an indirect model that can predict the state of a river in terms of contamination and considering possible evolution scenarios within the watershed (e.g. human activities and climate change).
