3DGenesis

This project addresses the challenges associated with maxillary sinus floor augmentation, a procedure essential for dental implant success following tooth loss. The resorption of alveolar bone and maxillary sinus pneumatization limit options for effective rehabilitation. Our goal is to develop 3D-printed, hierarchical scaffolds that enhance bone regeneration while minimizing associated risks, such as sinus membrane perforation and bioparticle migration. The proposed scaffolds will utilize a ternary blend of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), polylactic acid (PLA), and lignin, designed for bioactivity, bioresorbability, and appropriate mechanical properties. The TPU provides flexibility and support, while the PLA acts as a sacrificial phase to create interconnected porosity upon dissolution. Lignin will serve as an antioxidant and antibacterial agent, enhancing tissue healing. The project is structured into four main tasks: 1. Study of the structuring of ternary TPU/PLA/Lignin blends. 2. Fabricating core/shell filaments through co-extrusion to produce scaffolds with controlled macro, meso, and micro porosities. 3. Additive manufacturing of scaffolds with macro, meso and microscopic porosities and optimized mechanical properties. 4. Assessing the bioactivity and biodegradability of the scaffolds through in vitro and in vivo assays. Led by a consortium of experts from CERI MP, FARE, and BIOS, this project bridges materials science and regenerative medicine, aiming to produce innovative biomedical implants that enhance patient outcomes in dental procedures.
