NanoPore2

This NanopPore2 project will bring a team together to reply to an MSCA_Doctoral Network Joint Doctorate call, in order to well-trained fellows able to work in an interdisciplinary field. The project aims at exploring a recently developed approach for real-time detection of target molecules at the single molecule level. We aim to answer societal challenges such as personalized medicine via ultra-fast biomolecule analysis using the nanopore technology. The global market of biomarker analysis for health challenges is estimated to be more than 51 billions of dollars (cancer biomarkers around 30 billions of dollars by 2026). We will combine our multidisciplinary (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Material Sciences) and company development expertise to design novel tools to control molecule analysis via electrical detection with new biomimetic nanopores. These new nanopores are promising for novel applications in biomolecule sensing. They can only be realized by means of a broad interdisciplinary research platform; researchers from different fields need to closely collaborate in a focused and problem-oriented manner. For rapid novel applications we need to educate scientists who take new nanopore technology from the laboratory benchtop into the commercial markets. The innovative contribution here is the trans-disciplinary training in at least two or more, first class laboratories in the field. All partners carry expertise in the setup and development of spin-off companies and all young researcher will be exposed to entrepreneurship. A key benefit of this consortia are the mandatory secondments planned to take place across a variety of SMEs and companies. This Joint Doctorates project is above all a training project. The aim of the project is to train a new community of expert researchers on these themes: electrophysiology and data analysis, bio-physics, nanomaterials, nano-fluidics and fluid dynamics. They will benefit from excellence training, immersion in the non-academic sector, and high-quality supervision. At least 4 institutions will provide joint degrees. The close interaction among the young researchers working in different environments around nanopores will provide the necessary cross-disciplinarity setting to dramatically stimulate the creation of novel applications and be developing new tools to assemble personal biological catalogs.
