The OPERA project is concerned with the study of the concept of metasurface in the visible and near-infrared spectral range on one hand, and in the microwave spectral range on the other hand. The focus of the project is on the design of innovative numerical tools for the characterization and inverse design of planar devices based on metasurfaces. The DIOGENeS (DIscOntinuous GalErkin Nanoscale Solver) software suite developed at Inria constitutes the main numerical modeling software platform of the project. The research and development activities that will be undertaken in the project will aim at increasing the maturity level and spectrum of potential applications of this software suite. In particular, new features that will be added will allow the automated optimization of properties of metasurface-based devices driven by performance goals, by leveraging modern machine learning and metamodeling methods. The second important objective of the project is to demonstrate the transverse character of the methodological contributions and developed numerical tools via their application to a specific physical problem, which materializes similarly in the visible and near-infrared band, and microwave band. In the first case, the concept of metasurface is exploited for the control of the diffusion properties and the mastering of the optical signature of planar devices. Relying on the results of the numerical study, our objective in this project will also be the actual realization and experimental characterization of prototype planar devices based on optical metasurfaces. This activity will be performed by CRHEA, which possesses the infrastructures and expertise on materials that are needed for the fabrication of prototype photonic components. In the microwave band, we are interested in the control of scattering properties of metasurface-based materials in view of the reduction of the RCS (Radar Cross Section). Here, we shall limit ourselves to a numerical investigation of this problem. Finally, the participation of the Sunpartner Technologies SME will allow to demonstrate the dual (defense/civil) character of the research and development activities undertaken in the project on optical metasurfaces.
