REGENerative design FOR the Built Environment (REGEN4BE) aims to mainstream and operationalize regenerative design as a measurable, transformative, and scalable approach for construction and renovation in European neighborhoods. REGEN4BE integrates innovative digital tools, materials and technologies, participatory processes, and adaptive policy frameworks to achieve net-positive outcomes in four domains: climate resilience, ecological primacy, resource positivity, and human well-being. Five demonstration and replication sites in Paris, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Fribourg, Prague, and Uhre, and three replication sites supported by Financial Support to Third Parties, will test interoperable digital tools, bio-based, recycled and carbon-storing materials, and participatory co-design within Living Labs involving over 1000 citizens and 500 professionals. REGEN4BE will deliver a Regenerative Evaluation Framework and Guidelines, a Regenerative Design Intelligence Platform (REDIP) linking four AI-enabled digital modules, and three material innovations: circular bio-soils for nature-based solutions, lightweight cultural heritage-compatible green roofs, and recycled carbon-capture materials. Through Regulatory Innovation Clusters and multi-level governance, REGEN4BE will co-develop Policy Guidance Packages and capacity-building programs, enabling clustering with the New European Bauhaus Hub and the Built4People Partnership. Uniting 17 partners from 10 EU Member States and 2 associated countries, REGEN4BE bridges science, design, and governance to turn regenerative design from aspiration into practice restoring ecosystems, enhancing human well-being, and creating inclusive, climate-resilient, inspiring neighborhoods across Europe. REGEN4BE leaves a legacy of interoperable tools, open data, training programs, and policy blueprints accelerating the transition toward a fully regenerative built environment and strengthening Europe’s leadership in regenerative transformation.
