CHESS opens with a promise: to turn overlooked commons—alleys, linear links and tiny parks—into places that feel beautiful, sustainable and welcoming. It names a gap: Europe studies big parks, but micro‑spaces, night use, winter, or side‑effects are largely understudied while their relevance is acknowledged. A single research frame links questions, indicators and observations, applied across countries and seasons to build comparable evidence. Fieldwork goes beyond opinion. Harmonised counts, brief interviews and light sensing are combined across diverse cases and in four Mission cities and three pilots: inner courtyards in Zagreb that overheat and are underused; a Leuven pocket park, a long alley and a open areas between buildings; and a suburban chain in Dún Laoghaire where greens and play spaces need to be stitched into a shaded, safe route. Impact is read with care. Before‑after and matched comparisons where possible; season and after‑dark conditions are treated as key variables; mixed methods turn numbers into legible stories. From this, evidence‑based personas become agents in an equity‑ and climate‑aware model that tests sequences—add light, add shade, add seating, adjust rules—and shows who benefits, when, and for how long. A browser what‑if tool lets small teams explore options without heavy data. Validation is built in. Sites are revisited a year later; scenarios are replayed with residents and practitioners; results become context‑ready guidance on design, stewardship and governance. Open science and ethics shape sharing and consent, an a well-though exploitation approach with convincing capacity building ensures the results will be widely applied. The result is practical: clearer evidence, credible models and ready‑to‑apply guidance that help cities grow belonging, safety, health and local value in small spaces—and explain why each choice works in its place
