Europe faces a strategic gap in large scale laser-grade single crystal manufacturing. Currently used crystal growth methods remain quality-limited and size-capped due to thermal-gradient instabilities, dopant segregation and stress-induced cracking. Future inertial confinement fusion drivers require high-efficiency, high-repetition-rate solid-state laser systems, where gain-medium scalability and thermal management become critical bottlenecks. AT Crystals is developing a proprietary horizontal crystal-growth regime combining advanced thermal-field engineering, melt-geometry control and closed-loop process stabilisation, enabling uniform, crack-free doped YAG single crystals up to 140×140×20 mm. By developing and industrialising large-format, laser-grade doped YAG single-crystal gain media, the company directly addresses the scalability and thermal-management constraints limiting next-generation high-power laser architectures. Larger-aperture, high-homogeneity gain media can support architectural simplification, reduce cumulative thermal load per system and improve overall system-level efficiency. This breakthrough strengthens Europe’s strategic autonomy in advanced photonic materials critical for future fusion, industrial and research laser platforms. Starting from TRL 4, through integrated modelling, growth optimisation, rigorous metrology and market validation with leading laser/fusion centres, the project will achieve repeatable laser-grade qualification, independent metrology validation, pilot-scale production and integration in relevant high-power laser environments (TRL 8). The result will be the first pilot-ready process for scalable production of large-format doped YAG single crystals with laser-grade optical homogeneity, supported by a clear IP roadmap, verified demand and a credible go-to-market strategy. This commercially driven deep-tech initiative is capable of positioning Europe to lead the emerging market for fusion-grade laser materials.
