AL4BA aims to bring to the market GBE’s unique technology offering a biobased substitution to the fossil-based version of the irreplaceable building block molecule Isobutene (IBN) and its high characteristics alcanes derivatives. This satisfies market traction both in cosmetics and Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) industry due to i) growing consumers demand and ii) changes in regulation. GBE will: 1) Continuously adapt its process to alternative sugars sources (e.g beet/starch, wood, wastepaper); 2) Optimize the bacterial strain production performances and the fermentation process to achieve further performance increase and reduce costs; 4) Optimize purification- and oligomerization/hydrogenation processes for bio-IBN conversion into high-value alcanes derivatives on an industrial scale; 5) Scale-up and perform feasibility studies comprising ISBL and OSBL units; 6) Perform construction studies for permitting and construction of an industrial plant; 7) Industrialize in >2 use-cases (cosmetics and SAF markets). Our disruptive innovation is the implementation of a unique artificial metabolic pathway in E.coli bacterial strain to produce bio-IBN, through fermentation of polysaccharide (sugars) containing streams from vegetal biomass. This pathway enables the world’s first ever fermentation process to gaseous bio-IBN, leading to major productivity improvements compared to current fermentation liquid processes. AL4BA will lead to: 1) Less GHG emissions as, thanks to its renewability, the carbon footprint of bio-IBN is low compared to the fossil-based version; 2) Highest quality solution to the green transition of IBN-derived-markets and satisfaction of the needs in natural formulas: NO compromise; 3) Maintaining and developing EU's economic and industrial sovereignty, by offering EU-produced bio-based alternatives to high value-added fossil-based platform molecules. Thus, AL4BA is key for the green transition of strongly demanding cosmetics, fuel and chemical markets.
