Libfish

The LIBFISH project aims to transform fisheries by reducing the environmental impact of fishing vessels. It pioneers a shift in bottom trawling by integrating advanced digitalisation, hybrid propulsion, and precision-controlled fishing. Addressing one of the most energy-intensive and disruptive practices, LIBFISH seeks to cut seabed disturbance, greenhouse gas emissions, and operating costs while ensuring long-term viability for fishers. By 2028, LIBFISH will deliver large-scale demonstrators in the Atlantic and Arctic basin (Spain, France, Ireland, Canada), showcasing nets kept decimetres above the seabed. Supported by electronically piloted trawl doors, autonomous hydrofoils, and dynamic manoeuvring, this innovation will reduce seabed contact by up to 80%, lower fuel use by over 20%, and cut CO2 from propulsion and sediment resuspension. Demonstrators will reach Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 6–8, proving feasibility and readiness for deployment. Results will feed into best practices, standards, and a replication roadmap to speed uptake across fleets. Central to the project is an AI-driven digital twin and IoT-based sensor network, enabling real-time monitoring and predictive control of vessel dynamics, gear behaviour, and energy flows. These tools will build fishers’ digital and energy-efficiency skills, supported by training and advisory services, while generating open datasets for ecological assessment and wider digital adoption. LIBFISH uniquely couples technological excellence with socio-economic integration, embedding PhD research, training, and stakeholder engagement. It contributes to the European Green Deal, the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030, and the Mission “Restore Our Ocean and Waters” by linking innovation with skills and policy. Through its cross-Atlantic consortium of fishers, gear makers, shipyards, digital innovators, and research organisations, LIBFISH will set new benchmarks for sustainable trawling. Outcomes are designed for scalability,
