Optical amplifiers play a crucial role in modern telecommunications by ensuring data integrity over long distances at ultra-high bit rates. To meet the future demand of existing and emerging applications, such as quantum computing or AI networks, optical amplifiers need to combine ultra-high performance with scalability. Existing optical amplifiers in the market cannot provide them simultaneously. Aluvia Photonics addresses this gap as a provider of an advanced integrated photonics platform, uniquely differentiated by its high-performance on-chip doped amplifier solutions for advanced photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Our core innovation is a proprietary aluminium oxide-based (Al2O₃) photonic platform, that enables a scalable integration of all key photonics components in a cost-efficient way. Al2O₃ is an outstanding photonics material, offering unique advantages including ultra-low propagation losses, high power handling capability and on-chip amplification via rare-earth ion doping. Our photonic platform is designed for cost-efficient, wafer level mass production, enabling scalable and straightforward integration of multiple channels on a single to support ultra-high data throughput. This is a game changer in quantum, datacom, and telecom applications, and beyond. By doping our platform with different rare earths, we can flexibly provide optical amplification in various infrared bands tailored to specific application needs. In response to the most urgent market needs, our initial focus is on the C band, where we dope with Erbium to provide Erbium-doped waveguide amplifiers. These amplifiers have already been validated in industrial settings with paying customers in the quantum and telecom sectors. Thanks to the high rare-earth ion solubility of Al2O3, our on-chip amplifiers can be readily adapted to support new bands, and applications, by changing the doping element in a straightforward process.
