Boreal Bioproducts transforms low value sawdust and bark into high value biopolymers using a proprietary pressurised hot water extraction (PHWE) process that is chemical solvent free and zero waste. The technology selectively isolates polymeric hemicelluloses from sawdust and condensed tannins from bark at consistent quality. This is a breakthrough in softwood processing, where hemicelluloses are typically degraded or simply burned for energy. This enables sawdust and bark to enter high value material value chains rather than being used solely as bioenergy. Europe generates over 100 Mm³ of sawmill residues annually, offering a significant untapped and sustainable feedstock alone. Boreal’s approach provides several advantages: preservation of native polymer structures, low CAPEX, low emissions, rapid permitting, and scalability based on centralized, certified sawmill residues. By focusing on the selected biomass fractions - hemicelluloses and polymeric tannins - and being able to return the processed biomass to energy use, Boreal avoids the complexity and high risk that challenge many other biorefinery concepts. Boreal has operated its pilot plant since 2021, supplying >500 samples to industry and demonstrating strong market pull with offtakes and LoIs. Boreal plans to build a first of a kind (FOAK) plant in 2027. FOAK enables commercial market entry and large volume industrial testing, creating the foundation for full industrial scale deployment. First prioritized market segments include leather tanning chemicals, animal feed ingredients, and polymers for fiber packaging applications jointly present >150 million euro serviceable market. With existing industrial partnerships, secured raw materials, validated technology, and a robust IP strategy, Boreal offers a scalable, cost competitive path to sustainable and resilient biomaterial transformation across Europe. Now EIC support is needed to speed up the implementation and lower the Private Equity barrier to join.
