Fostering employability skills through environmentally responsible educational escape rooms: Escape the unemployment (EDU)

<< Background >>We applied for this project due to the pressing issue of youth unemployment in the Europe, particularly in Spain, Serbia, and Cyprus. Eurostat’s 2022 report highlighted high unemployment rates among highly educated youth lacking practical skills. The COVID-19 crisis worsened this gap between labor market needs and available competencies. To address this, we introduced green educational escape rooms, integrating game-based learning, role-model education, and digital gamification to enhance employability while promoting sustainability. This innovative approach fosters critical thinking, teamwork, and decision-making while engaging young people in eco-friendly practices aligned with the Green Deal. Existing non-formal education tools often fail to engage youth. By using interactive, problem-solving methodologies, we help young people develop entrepreneurial, digital, and soft skills. Digital escape rooms bridge technology and nature, reconnecting youth with environmental learning. The project equips youth workers with training and materials to implement escape rooms, empowering them to support young people’s career exploration and personal growth effectively.<< Objectives >>The project aimed to achieve these objectives: Establishing a diverse consortium of EU and non-EU partners to foster cross-border cooperation, exchange expertise, and develop multilingual educational tools that enhance youth employability. Developing Game-Based Educational Resources by creating interactive learning tools, including a methodological guide, a pedagogical guide, and six escape rooms, to equip young people with employability skills while promoting environmental responsibility and climate action. A training program ensured that youth workers and educators were equipped to integrate escape rooms into non-formal education settings, fostering long-term impact and sustainability. With combination of physical and digital escape room elements, the project introduced hybrid learning opportunities aligned with contemporary educational trends. Testing in real-world environments enabled improvements based on participants’ feedback. Open-access resources ensured applicability, allowing other organizations to adopt and implement the methodology, thereby extending the project's impact on youth employability and environmental education.<< Implementation >>The project implemented transnational meetings to ensure smooth collaboration, leading to the creation of a pedagogical guide and a methodological guide outlining the escape room approach. To provide practical tools, six Escape Toolkits were developed and tested with youth and youth workers, enhancing employability skills and green practices. Key activities included training sessions and workshops to equip youth workers with the skills to use escape rooms in non-formal education, as well as pilot testing with young people to refine the methodology. Multiplier events in consortium countries engaged stakeholders and promoted adoption in educational settings. A strong dissemination strategy ensured broad impact through social media, a project website, digital newsletters, and media features. Collaboration with municipalities, schools, and employment agencies supported the integration of escape rooms into youth employability programs. The project ensured sustainability by providing open-access materials for continued use and adaptation.<< Results >>The project achieved several intellectual outputs contributing to the enhancement of youth employability and environmental awareness through innovative non-formal education methods.Methodological Guide (PR1) – A framework that outlines the educational approach behind using escape rooms for employability and green skills development. Pedagogical Guide (PR2) – A resource designed to provide nine educational escape room scenarios tailored to the youth and education sector. Six Escape Toolkits (PR3) – Fully developed escape room scenarios, complete with instructions, materials, and facilitation guidelines. Training sessions for youth workers provided them with practical skills to implement and adapt escape room methodologies in their local contexts. Pilot testing of the escape rooms with young people and youth workers helped refine the methodology based on real-world feedback. Implementation of multiplier events across consortium countries, engaging local communities, educators, youth organizations, employment agencies, and policymakers in discussions on the project’s outcomes and potential applications. Online dissemination through social media, the project website, and digital newsletters expanded the project's reach.
