Green Chemistry Practices For a Better Future

"<< Background >>We applied this project to address critical needs in sustainability, education, and environmental awareness. It focused on combating environmental pollution and climate change by integrating green chemistry practices into education, aligning with our goal to promote sustainable development. By creating alternative green chemistry lesson modules, the project enhanced chemistry education, equipping students with green skills, scientific thinking, and problem-solving abilities for future careers. We aimed to raise awareness about the European Green Deal and encouraged sustainable consumption and production habits. The project ensured inclusivity by actively involving students with special educational needs, fostering diversity and engagement. It also enhanced language, digital, and intercultural skills while promoting EU values and citizenship. We aimed to collaborate with international partners for exchanging of good practices, strengthening our institutional and international capacity. Also, by disseminating project results we wanted to empower other institutions to adopt green practices, contributing to environmental protection and sustainable education.<< Objectives >>By implementing this project, we aimed to teach young chemistry learners (ages 14–18) the principles of green and sustainable chemistry, helping them assess and compare green alternatives to traditional chemical methods. Our goal was to raise awareness among students, teachers, and parents about the harmful effects of toxic chemicals on human health and the environment. We aimed to produce alternative, natural, and eco-friendly products such as organic dyes, personal care items, cleaning products, soaps from waste oils, and compost. Encouraging the use of these products sought to contribute to environmental and human health protection. We also focused on creating digital green chemistry lesson modules to integrate into lessons, classroom activities, and lab experiments. Providing equal opportunities for students with special educational needs was central to promoting diversity and inclusion. The project aimed to enhance chemistry lab skills, career planning, and international employment prospects for students. It also sought to improve language, digital, and presentation skills while fostering intercultural understanding, raising awareness of EU values, and strengthening collaboration among VET schools internationally.<< Implementation >>In our project, we implemented activities to engage students and teachers in green and sustainable chemistry practices. We had four international mobilities:""From Waste Oil to Cleaning Soap,"" teaching soap production from waste oils and highlighting environmental benefits.""Natural Dyes,"" focusing on creating eco-friendly dyes from natural sources.""From Waste to Compost,"" exploring compost production and sustainable organic waste management.""Natural Personal Cleaning and Care Products,"" developing eco-friendly personal care items. Two virtual training sessions supported the mobilities. In the first month, Gürpınar Borsa İstanbul provided training on the harm of waste oils and chemicals to water and the soap production process. In the seventh month, Colegiul de Industrie Alimentara taught the effects of harmful chemicals on soil and food and compost production.Students completed pre-tasks, and teachers prepared module drafts finalized during mobilities. Monthly virtual management meetings ensured effective planning and collaboration. These activities enhanced participants' skills, supported sustainable practices, and advanced green chemistry education.<< Results >>At the end of the project, we achieved significant outputs and results: Educational Outputs: Students learned about sustainable chemistry and green practices, including the European Green Deal, water and soil pollution, and recycling. Digital green chemistry lesson modules were created and integrated into curricula. Practical Skills: Students produced eco-friendly products like soap from waste oils, organic dyes, compost from food waste, and personal care items from natural materials. Sustainability Practices: Schools applied these practices by producing soap, creating natural dyes, composting, and making personal care products. Cultural and Social Awareness: Students experienced different cultures, learned about EU citizenship, and worked with students with special needs to increase awareness of inclusion and diversity. Skills Development: Students and teachers improved their digital, language, and scientific skills through the project activities. Community Impact: The modules and practices were shared widely, helping other schools adopt green chemistry, contributing to environmental protection."
