<< Background >>The FELLOWSHIP project was initiated to address the pressing need for emotional intelligence (EQ) development in response to the rapid societal changes and challenges of our time, such as rising unemployment, climate change, and social tensions. These issues significantly impact young people, who must develop the emotional resilience and competencies required to navigate uncertainty and ambiguity effectively. EQ is critical for personal and professional success, often outweighing intellectual ability (IQ) in fostering strong relationships, managing stress, and achieving goals. High EQ enables individuals to regulate emotions, empathise with others, and build meaningful connections. Yet, many young people and youth workers lack the tools and support to cultivate these essential skills. FELLOWSHIP bridges this gap by providing youth workers with innovative, game-based resources such as the Board Game on Emotional Intelligence and the Outdoor Games Guide. These tools empower youth workers to coach young people, enhancing their emotional awareness and social interactions. By addressing this need, the project fosters resilience, mental health, and improved societal cohesion.<< Objectives >>The FELLOWSHIP project aimed to empower youth workers and young people by equipping them with critical knowledge and skills in emotional intelligence. A key objective was to impart these competencies through innovative game-based learning methods, fostering personal growth and resilience. The project sought to assist youth workers in functioning more effectively by exposing them to cutting-edge concepts and methodologies in emotional intelligence and game-based learning, ensuring they were well-prepared to address the needs of the youth they served. Another core objective was to develop a skilled cohort of youth workers capable of integrating these tools into their professional practice, supporting their career progression and enhancing their ability to guide young people effectively. By encouraging the exchange of experiences and knowledge, the project broadened the perspectives of both youth workers and young people, promoting intercultural understanding and collaboration. Through these efforts, FELLOWSHIP contributed to the creation of a robust support system, empowering youth to navigate the complexities of modern life while fostering positive societal change.<< Implementation >>The FELLOWSHIP project was implemented through a structured, sequential approach, with each output serving as a foundation for the next. Initial activities focused on research and stakeholder engagement across partner countries, resulting in the Conceptualised Research Methodology and the Outdoor Games Guide—core resources designed to support the development of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) in youth work. These informed the design and production of two serious games: a Board Game and a Digital Game based on conversation flashcards, both of which promote emotional awareness, empathy, and interpersonal skills through game-based learning. These tools were subsequently tested through two five-day Learning & Training Labs involving youth workers and young people. The first training was held in Berlin (May 2024), and the second in Sofia (November 2024). Implementation was supported by continuous partner collaboration, evaluation using both qualitative and quantitative indicators, and wide dissemination through newsletters, multiplier events, and a multilingual digital toolkit to ensure long-term impact.<< Results >>Key outputs include an evidence-based e-handbook and database, an Outdoor Games Guide, a Board Game on Emotional Intelligence, and a Digital/Serious Game on Emotional Intelligence. These tools can serve as practical, engaging, and impactful resources for youth workers and their beneficiaries. The project also produced dynamic training labs, enabling youth workers to develop critical skills such as communication, conflict resolution, teamwork, and empathy.
