Community Radio Empowering Unheard Voices

<< Background >>Our project team saw the need to harness the potential of community radio organisations as dynamic adult education centres, empowering diverse and marginalised communities with skills and platform to share their unique experiences. The specific needs we addressed are:TG1: Adult Learners Experiencing Marginalisation, newcomers & those distant from formal education face barriers to accessing new skills and visibility. CommUNITY provides targeted training to enhance communication and digital proficiencies (inc recognition of learning via Digital Badges). This training enables participants to create and engage with radio and podcast content, amplifying their voices and experiences.TG2: Community/Cause Organisations struggle to engage effectively with those most excluded in society. At a time of high tension and fearmongering re ‘newcomers’, our project facilitates these connections, offering new and safe methods and channels for engagement.TG3: Adult Educators frequently encounter challenges in delivering training that reaches underrepresented voices & lack novel pedagogical strategies. Our tailored training resources equip educators with tools to overcome these.•TG 4: Community Radios want to be more inclusive but lack pathways<< Objectives >>Our overall objective was to empower community radio organisations & volunteers to become an influential pillar of adult education in civic engagement of diverse & vulnerable groups. We wanted to achieve • INCLUSION & DIVERSITY via a new inclusive training programme for adult educators and community radios, focusing on communication, storytelling, and digital broadcasting for disadvantaged adults (esp newcomers inc Ukrainians). This was achieved through open-access modules on participatory content creation, technical and digital skills, volunteer coordination, and marketing strategies. • ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP via focus on providing digital credentials for adult learners, especially volunteers and vulnerable community members with verified representations of their skills, fostering pride and strengthening community radio organisations• IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF ADULT EDU WORK via Adult Educator's Guide to support online and in-person instruction. This guide complements our bespoke training programme, equips community radio staff and volunteers with the necessary skills and knowledge to act as novel community-based educational hubs.•ORGANISATIONAL & STAFF IMPACT on all partners and target groups<< Implementation >>Activities implemented:-• WP2 empowered adults via 6 open access modules in community radio and podcasting through training in content creation, audio editing, and communication techniques, bringing together local and diverse voices for community engagement and social cohesion. Our training programme was pilot tested with 59 users and downloaded in English (1960 dl), German (1161 dl), and Italian (1488 dl). The resource was highly valued in testing. Given our network of community radio stations, our educator's guide was downloaded 1,945 times. It is also being implemented via partner organisations. • WP3 focused on creating and awarding digital badge credentials to individuals who completed the training course. Users signed up across all language versions and receiving digital badges is 478 in the lifetime of the project, with many more underway.• WP4 Placements Guide is making significant progress in teaching community members how to create and produce inclusive radio programmes and podcasts. This activity has equipped more than 12 community radio teams and adult educators in direct testing while the guide itself has an impressive 718 downloads (English 347, Italian 194, German 177) and collection of 13 podcasts << Results >>WP1: Project Management: Established foundational guidelines and commitments, including accessibility and green principles.WP2: Training Programme: Created a 6-module Community Radio and Podcasting curriculum for underrepresented groups, pilot-tested with 59 users and downloaded 4,609 times. It empowered individuals as creators, enhancing both personal skills and community cohesion.WP3: Digital Badges: Awarded digital badges for course completion, boosting participants’ employability. For many partners, this marked their first experience with digital badges, a significant milestone.WP4: Placements & Podcasts: Produced a Placements Guide and a podcast channel featuring 13 episodes, applying learners’ new skills.WP5: Dissemination & Sustainability: Achieved broad visibility with 400+ social media followers, 46 blog articles, 231 partner posts, and a comprehensive final dissemination report.
