Remembrance. Fostering civic engagement and raising awareness about cultural heritage for European Students

<< Background >>We applied for this project driven by the urgency to confront the resurgence of fascism. The lessons from the Spanish Civil War and WWII are invaluable in understanding how to combat fascism. The resurgence of fascism in Europe and globally is deeply concerning, and halting this wave is imperative. By delving into the complexities of the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, we can discover valuable insights into the effective strategies and mechanisms in fighting fascism. Moreover, we can analyse the failures and weaknesses that allowed fascism to take root, ensuring that we do not repeat the mistakes of history. The EU's foundational principles underscore the imperative to uphold values of dignity, freedom, and equality.<< Objectives >>The project aimed to develop training tools using the stories of activists who opposed fascism during the war. Through these narratives, the consequences of restrictions on freedom of expression and democratic practices were explored. Students were brought together to discuss contemporary European democratic progress and the important role of European solidarity in supporting civil society, free media and open discourse - essential elements of democracy and peace. The training was aimed at university students, particularly vulnerable to right-wing propaganda spread through social and digital platforms.<< Implementation >>European partners from Spain, Poland, Ireland and Cyprus and Greece came together to develop an on-line digital resource which includes an innovative training approach to highlight important learnings from cultural heritageremembrance. A networking platform, a digital book and Train the Trainer Guide including stories from the partners' countries, and an online storytelling training module.<< Results >>The project aimed to capitalise on the resurgence of far-right politics in Europe and around the world. Its aim was to foster wide-ranging cooperation with an emphasis on promoting historical awareness and education in relation to the lessons of the Spanish Civil War and World War II. Remembrance used the investment made by EU countries in recent years to equip young people with critical reasoning skills in relation to fascist ideologies or any human rights violations. Using an innovative learning approach based on the experiences of anti-fascist activists, the project raises awareness among young people to prevent history from repeating itself.
