Think, Dream And Discover With Digital Storytelling

<< Background >>By implementing the project, we aimed to introduce an effective, modern teaching method—digital storytelling—validated by research as a tool that boosts motivation and retention and develops key literacies (creativity, narrative and the organisation of thought). This rationale underpinned our funding application and the choice of the project’s guiding methodology.We needed to strengthen, in pupils and teachers alike, the key competences of the twenty-first century (ICT, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration/communication-the 4C model), together with language competence, media literacy and the safe use of the internet. We also sought to internationalise our schools and foster intercultural attitudes, including tolerance and a sense of European citizenship; the project was designed to support sustainable development and the protection of cultural heritage.The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the increased time young people spend in digital environments and their growing interest in online activities. Traditional teaching methods proved insufficient, whereas pupils were more motivated during engaging digital tasks. It addressed the need to counteract social exclusion among pupils from rural areas and with educational difficulty<< Objectives >>The project objectives were very specific and addressed the needs identified by the partners:- Development of pupils’ and teachers’ digital and media skills.- Promotion of innovative methods, such as digital storytelling and the use of Web 2.0 tools.- Improvement of pupils’ English language skills (reading, speaking and listening).- Increased cultural awareness and promotion of national heritage.- Strengthening international co-operation and the exchange of good practice.- Greater engagement of pupils at risk of exclusion—particularly those facing economic and social disadvantage.- Development of 21st-century competences, such as critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and content creation.- Exploring and promoting the cultural heritage of pupils’ own towns/countries, and linking content to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<< Implementation >>Implemented activities included:- Establishing project teams and project boards in schools.- Developing the project logo, website and promotional brochure, and running outreach on Facebook and the eTwinning platform.- Teacher training in the Netherlands (LTTa1), where participants learnt the process of creating a digital story using AI, voice and animation.- Workshops in Rome (LTTa2), where pupils created digital stories about their home cities and a typical day in ancient Rome, using tools such as Canva and StoryJumper.- Cultural heritage through digital historical documents (Turkey, LTTa3)—animated stories (Animaker) created in international teams, based on tradition, history and art; A Day in the Ancient City of Ephesus—stories produced with interactive applications.- Our Future with Digital Storytelling—stories with a message (Poland, LTTa4)—activities centred on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.- Presentations and lesson plans on topics including a traditional song and a painter, handicrafts, buildings, cities and countries.- A glossary containing terms related to media and digital education in five languages.- Regular online meetings and document management via Google Drive.<< Results >>Project results and outcomes:- Creation of digital stories by teachers and pupils using Web 2.0 tools.- Enhanced teachers’ digital competences—the ability to create teaching materials using storytelling (including lesson plans).- Development of pupils’ language skills, creativity, teamwork and intercultural communication.- Ready-to-use digital products: brochures, presentations, e-books and video stories (available, for example, on StoryJumper and YouTube).-Integration of storytelling with education about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).- Increased school prestige and pupil engagement, especially among those with fewer opportunities.- Growth in digital competences among both pupils and teachers.- Improved language proficiency (especially speaking and writing in English).- Increased pupil motivation, particularly among those from rural areas.- Creation of additional digital outputs: e-books, an eTwinning site, an online exhibition, a calendar, stories on cultural heritage, and a multilingual glossary.-Development of collaboration, creativity and self-expression skills.-Strengthened international co-operation and exchange of good practice.-Promotion of cultural heritage and awareness of European citizenship.
