Self-Evaluation Tools for e-Inclusion in HEI

<< Background >>We applied for this project to address the pressing need for more inclusive and accessible digital education in higher education institutions (HEIs). The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted significant challenges for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), as many struggled to access and fully participate in online learning. These barriers arose from a lack of accessible teaching materials, inadequate institutional support, and insufficient awareness among educators about inclusive practices. The SET4Inclusion project brings together partners with a shared commitment to digital inclusivity in higher education, motivated by their belief in creating an equitable society and their firsthand experience with barriers faced by marginalized communities.We aimed to develop practical tools and resources to empower HEIs to create more inclusive digital learning environments. By focusing on self-evaluation tools, e-learning materials, and best practices, we aimed to provide HEI management and teachers with concrete solutions to assess and improve their approaches to inclusivity. Ultimately, this project aimed to ensure that all students, regardless of their needs, have equal opportunities to succeed in digital education.<< Objectives >>The project's main objective was to enhance the accessibility and inclusivity of digital education in higher education institutions (HEIs), particularly for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). We aimed to achieve this by developing tools and resources to support HEI management and educators in creating inclusive learning environments.Specifically, the objectives were:- Develop a theoretical framework for inclusive digital education.- Create self-evaluation tools for HEI management and teachers, enabling them to identify strengths, gaps, and areas for development.- Raise awareness about the importance of inclusivity in digital education through workshops and collaborative activities.- Provide accessible e-learning materials and practical resources on an intuitive e-platform.- Promote the active involvement of SEND students in co-creating solutions, ensuring that their voices and needs are prioritized. Our goal was to equip HEIs with the knowledge and tools to foster equitable access to education for all students. We aimed to enhance digital skills, improve access to digital tools, and build the confidence to use and participate actively in the educational context.<< Implementation >>The project implemented various activities across work packages WP2 to WP4. We conducted a literature review to identify factors influencing inclusive digital education and developed a theoretical framework. Surveys were designed and executed to gather input from HEI staff and students, followed by workshops to validate findings and refine tools. Two self-evaluation tools were created and integrated into an e-platform alongside supporting resources.E-learning materials, in the form of microlearning units, were developed and piloted to ensure their usability and impact. Good practices were documented, evaluated, and disseminated during hybrid events, including the final international conference. Partners engaged in regular meetings, piloting activities, and transnational events to align efforts and ensure progress. Dissemination efforts included workshops, webinars, and publications. A sustainability and exploitation plan was prepared to ensure the project's long-term impact.<< Results >>The project delivered several outputs and results:- A validated theoretical framework with 20 key factors for inclusive digital education. - Two self-evaluation tools, one for HEI management and one for HEI teachers, were created to assess inclusivity practices and identify areas for improvement. - 41 microlearning units across key areas: Leadership and School Perspectives, Collaboration and Networking, Infrastructure and Technology, Continuous Professional Development, Pedagogical Support and Implementation, Inclusive Assessment Practices, and Student Digital Competence.- A collection of 15 good practices provides an important source of experience for HEIs. - An e-platform that hosts microlearning units and integrates self-evaluation tools and good practices.- A series of workshops effectively enhanced participants' knowledge and confidence in digital inclusion.- Final conference that successfully disseminated project outcomes to a diverse audience.- A sustainability and exploitation plan to ensure long-term use and broad dissemination of tools and resources through events, workshops, and publications. These results give HEIs concrete tools and resources to support inclusive digital education.
