<< Background >>The LOFT project was developed in response to pressing challenges in food systems, exacerbated by the COVID-19, which highlighted vulnerabilities in global supply chains. Consumers increasingly prioritize healthy diets, food safety and security, while small-scale local food producers (LFPs) struggle to meet traceability and sustainability demands. LFPs lacked the digital readiness, infrastructure and networks to adapt to rapidly changing consumer habits and supply chain disruptions. They struggled to transition to digital sales, reach broader markets and ensure food traceability. Meanwhile, consumers have increasingly looked for safer, local food sources, but they have not had access to reliable platforms and guidance. The project addressed important gaps in vocational education, digital transformation, consumer awareness and food security through integrated work packages—ranging from a VET methodology to a multifunctional website/platform.The background of LOFT is based on: Strengthening local food systems; Equipping LFPs with VET and digital tools; Sustainability awareness of the public; Contribution to structuring data on EU local food sectors.<< Objectives >>The main aim was to assist the EU's policy on exploiting the capabilities of digital technologies for teaching and learning; to improve the digital skills of small-scale food producers (LFPs) who are part of economically and geographically disadvantaged populations in periurban zones of large cities by engaging them in the digital transformation process.Specific Objectives were identified as;SO1: Developing a database to unveil the potential of LFPs and consumption for food safety and food security issues on a trust based approach between the LFPs and local consumers.SO2: Facilitating the digital adaptation of LFPs by developing their digital skills which became essential for Professional lives of producers and everyday lives of consumers.SO3: Establishing sustainable food hubs which will act as online market for local food actors including the LFPs, the consumers and local managing authorities.SO4: Generating a flexible VET tool (mobile application) where all the previous objectives combine; (a) database, (b) VET methodology, (c) local food hubs.SO5: Raising public awareness on local food, food safety, labelling, climate change and food security, sustainable growth of agro-food sector etc.<< Implementation >>WP1: 4 Transnational meetings; 11 Online meetings; Interim and Final reporting; Numerous project management tasks including communication, time, financial, risk management aspectsWP2: Literature review and desk research; Field research: Addressing the specific needs of our target audiences; Identifying Good Practices WP3: Developing LOFT Methodology with its tools; Learning Teaching and Training Activity 1; Local Pilot tests; Final version of LOFT MET after pilotingWP4: A methodology for Local Food Hubs; Creating the Local Food Maps with integration of LFPs; Creation of Roadmap for Farmers, Consumer’s Guide and Policy Recommendation PaperWP5: Development of the Digital Platform; Learning Teaching and Training Activity 2; Local Pilot tests for the LOFT PlatformWP6: Development of the LOFT Dissemination Strategy and its tools; Design of visibility materials; Implementing local national Dissemination activities throughout the project and reporting (Interim+Final); Collecting the reports from partners and generating General Reporting for Dissemination (Interim+Final)WP7: Development of the QA plan with monitoring and evaluation tools; QA activities for project works; QA reporting<< Results >>The LOFT project delivered tangible outcomes that strengthened local food systems and promoted digital transformation:-Research & Analysis – Comprehensive mapping of needs, legal frameworks and best practices in local food production, providing a foundation for project activities.-Capacity Building – Enhanced digital and entrepreneurial skills among LFPs, improving their competitiveness and encouraging new market initiatives.-Stakeholder Collaboration – Strengthened cooperation among LFPs, policymakers and consumers, fostering trust and increasing demand for local food.-Digital Transformation – Increased digital readiness of LFPs through tailored training and the LOFT digital platform.-Public Awareness – Raised consumer consciousness on sustainable food choices, traceability and climate impact, expanding the reach of local food initiatives.-Sustainability & Scalability – Ensured long-term impact through open-access tools, training materials and a replicable model for EU-wide adoption.
