Creating Leading-edge Innovations for Mitigating And Tackling the Effects of Climate Change

<< Background >>The application for this project arose from the partners’ realization that climate change is one of the most urgent and complex challenges of our time. Inspired by the European Green Deal, the Paris Agreement, and the EU’s priorities for green and digital transition, we identified a dual need: raising awareness of the climate crisis and empowering students with technological skills to become agents of change. Research conducted in our schools revealed a significant gap between environmental concern and knowledge of practical solutions. The project aimed to bridge this gap by combining environmental education, innovation, and social engagement. Students were encouraged to design solutions, participate in actions and competitions, and collaborate with organizations, enabling them to become active citizens capable of shaping a sustainable future.<< Objectives >>The primary goal of this project was to empower school communities to actively contribute to combating climate change by combining environmental education with digital innovation. The aim was to cultivate a generation of students who are both environmentally aware and technologically equipped to design and implement sustainable solutions. We sought to highlight how technology—especially Artificial Intelligence (AI)—can contribute to climate change adaptation. Technology, from being a source of environmental problems, becomes part of the solution. We wanted students to recognize their role as active citizens, both locally and globally. We also aimed at institutional transformation; we acknowledged that long-term change requires strengthening capacities within schools and aligning with the broader EU policy frameworks. One of the added values of Erasmus+ projects is the opportunity for international collaboration and exchange. We sought to leverage the diverse cultural and educational perspectives of the partner schools. Finally, our project was closely aligned with the EU’s vision of equipping young people with key competences for lifelong learning.<< Implementation >>The project included four main activities, each organised by a different partner school. In the Netherlands, students explored the causes and consequences of climate change, recognised the importance of biodiversity and sustainable water management, created videos, and participated in field trips. In Turkey, they worked on the 3R model (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) exploring sustainable solutions, and designed Digital Product Passports after visiting advanced recycling facilities. In Romania, they focused on the relation between technology and climate change, proposing and presenting innovative ideas on sustainable practices. In Greece, they explored the role of Artificial Intelligence in collecting climate data, predicting changes and designing solutions to mitigate and tackle the effects of Climate Change, by developing project proposals towards a sustainable future. At the same time, Climate Clubs were established in each school, awareness-raising actions were organised, and partnerships were formed with NGOs, universities, and local authorities, in order to ensure the project’s long-term impact.<< Results >>Our project produced specific educational and technological outputs. Digital Product Passports, educational scenarios, presentations, and e-books were created. Innovative ideas using Artificial Intelligence for tackling climate change were designed and presented. Digital posters, videos, and short films were produced. An official project website was created, where all the outputs were uploaded, along with the corresponding work on the e-Twinning platform and an app for Android devices. Four international meetings were organized, Climate Clubs were established in all schools, and outputs were integrated into the school curriculum. Events and collaborations were held with NGOs, universities, and local stakeholders who supported the students’ initiatives to ensure the sustainability of actions after the end of the project.Students’ language and digital skills were also strengthened, along with 21st-century skills such as collaboration, critical-creative-innovative thinking. Finally, intercultural and transnational cooperation contributed to the personal and professional development of the involved educators, as well.
