8 ways to eat to save the planet

"<< Background >>The project was motivated by the need for significant environmental and public health concerns, including climate change and childhood obesity. A Cambridge University study published in Nature Climate Change emphasized the need for a global dietary shift to reduce the environmental impacts of increasing meat consumption, such as deforestation and higher methane emissions. Childhood obesity is a growing issue, particularly in Western countries, exacerbated by unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles. The World Health Organization has emphasized the need for policies promoting healthy eating and physical activity to address this epidemic. In Denmark, the project responded to the need for more practical learning approaches in increasingly academic, primary, and secondary education. Activities like cooking and drama make education more dynamic and relevant, and with a climate-friendly eating focus, the project brought together students, teachers, and parents in shared activities, including musical events. The project encouraged sustainable, healthy eating from a young age to foster lifelong habits, reduce food waste, and support both health and the planet, while equipping educators with tools for interactive teaching.<< Objectives >>We sought to strengthen teachers' professional skills with innovative tools to creatively and effectively teach sustainability, climate change, and healthy lifestyles. The project aimed to equip educators to inspire students to become ""agents of change"" through practical, hands-on learning, such as theatre and improvisation techniques. The goal was to motivate students by addressing global issues they care about and promoting sustainable behaviors like reducing waste and healthier eating. 8WAYS project aimed to develop student's skills and values to take meaningful action on these topics, integrating these competencies into the curriculum. The project aimed to contribute to planetary sustainability by encouraging more sustainable consumption habits, raising awareness about the environmental impact of food choices, and promoting practices that reduce waste. We aimed to combat childhood obesity and foster healthy habits by educating students on balanced diets and reducing processed food consumption. To achieve these objectives, the project produced three key outputs:- Handbook for teachers for 8 theatrical stories to be presented in schools.-The use of improvisation theatre techniques -Digital platform that includes recipes<< Implementation >>Partners implemented a variety of activities across WPs, aimed at promoting sustainable eating habits and enhancing education through innovative methods.Partners conducted a joint research initiative to identify the eight most harmful foods to the planet, resulting in a comprehensive teacher's manual. Ribamar developed questionnaires for 400 students to assess their consumption patterns, which informed the manual's content.Next, partners organized workshops that engaged students in improvisation theatre, allowing them to express themselves through visual, verbal, and body techniques. This culminated in the creation of eight theatrical plays, with each partner contributing to the storytelling process based on the harmful foods identified in the Manual.Partners also launched a digital platform featuring educational videos and a recipe book, where students uploaded their own healthy recipes, promoting community engagement and sharing of food traditions. Moreover, partners executed a dissemination strategy that included social media promotion, newsletters, and multiplier events to share project outcomes with a wider audience, ensuring all partners actively contributed to raising awareness about sustainable eating practices.<< Results >>Detailed study identified the eight most harmful foods, providing a foundation for a teacher’s manual tailored for educational use. Students from participating countries created and performed eight plays focused on specific foods with substantial environmental impacts. Each play promoted awareness of sustainable practices.-Partners developed a variety of educational resources, including:-Guide for Improvisational Techniques, which equipped educators with effective strategies for integrating improvisation into lessons.-Methodology for Theater Plays, outlining clear guidelines for structuring educational performances.-Manual for Pedagogical Practices, offering tailored approaches for implementing theater as a learning tool.An interactive platform was established, allowing students to share and discover healthy recipes, fostering creativity and encouraging sustainable eating habits across Europe.Sixteen informative video clips were produced to reinforce healthy eating practices and environmental awareness.A successful three-day training event in Spain equipped staff from all partner organizations with the skills to deliver nutrition and cooking courses.Active promotion of project activities/outputs on social media/website"
