Media and Information Literacy: Learning to Think Critically

"<< Background >>We applied for this project to address the growing impact of online disinformation on young people, influencing their decisions on health, democracy, and social issues. The rapid spread of misinformation, especially via digital media, highlights the urgent need for media and information literacy in schools. Our goal was to equip students with critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, teamwork, ICT, and communication skills to navigate digital content responsibly. Aligned with the Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027) and the Media Services Directive (AVMSD), our project supported digital transformation in schools and the fight against harmful content. While EU countries implement these policies, change is still slow, making it essential for schools to take proactive steps.By integrating media literacy into our curricula, we wanted to foster socially aware, open-minded individuals and empower teachers to drive these changes. As our project results will be available online, we hope to support lifelong learning for a wider audience.<< Objectives >>Our key objectives were to equip students with skills to analyze information sources, understand media messages, and make informed decisions in areas like citizenship, human rights, and digital content creation. We aimed to reinforce critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, ICT, and communication skills, helping students become more socially aware and open-minded.Recognizing the dominance of virtual life, we wanted to teach students how to identify real information needs, filter content responsibly, and create quality media. Additionally, we wanted them to act as active citizens by addressing underrepresented topics and fostering intercultural dialogue. To build digitally ready and resilient schools, we focused on teacher development, enhancing their ICT, language, and mentoring skills through innovative methodologies. Our 35 workshops, led by teachers and local professionals, aimed to promote common values and community engagement.Key project results include ""The Media and Information Literacy Handbook for Teachers"" with 20 learning scenarios and a MOOC for students, ensuring accessibility for diverse learners. We also created an eTwinning/Twinspace platform to share our work within the EU educational community.<< Implementation >>We implemented activities aimed at developing a structured approach to Media and Information Literacy (MIL) across partner schools. While MIL was previously covered in various ways depending on individual teacher initiatives, we created a comprehensive framework to integrate it systematically. We conducted 35 workshops for students and teachers, focusing on analyzing media content, responsible digital citizenship, and content creation. Teachers collaborated with local professionals to reinforce critical thinking, problem-solving, ICT, and communication skills.A key outcome was the creation of ""The Media and Information Literacy Handbook for Teachers"" with 20 learning scenarios and the ""Media and Information Literacy MOOC for students"". The MOOC includes evaluation tools, accessibility features for students with learning difficulties, and self-paced modules, ensuring inclusivity.Additionally, we worked towards introducing MIL as an extracurricular subject in partner schools and sharing results locally and nationally. An eTwinning/Twinspace platform was created to support collaboration and dissemination.<< Results >>The concrete outputs of our project include 35 workshops for students and teachers, fostering media literacy, digital skills, and critical thinking through collaboration with local education authorities, professionals, and NGOs. These partnerships ensured a synergy between schools, institutions, and civic organizations, promoting lasting cooperation beyond the project’s duration.Key project results are ""The Media and Information Literacy Handbook for Teachers"" and the ""Media and Information Literacy MOOC for students,"" integrating civic education, ICT, language education, and sustainable development. The MOOC combines teacher training results, student-generated digital materials, and diverse educational methodologies. It remains dynamic, with updates and new media trends, ensuring long-term relevance.Additionally, an eTwinning/Twinspace platform was created for resource sharing, and the coordinating school will continue updating questionnaires and quizzes on the digital platform. The project’s outcomes will be disseminated through seminars and teacher training events, ensuring sustainable impact and further educational development."
