Overcoming fear of failure among youth through comic design and digital storytelling

<< Background >>We applied for this project because it addresses a crucial issue we have consistently witnessed: the fear of failure among young people. As youth workers and educators, we’ve observed how fear—exacerbated by social media and societal pressures—can stifle growth, erode self-confidence, and lead to avoidance or anxiety. This project offers a creative and meaningful solution through digital storytelling and comic design, which effectively engage young audiences while promoting resilience and a healthier perception of mistakes. Participating in this project meets both our professional and personal need to gain innovative tools that empower youth to overcome self-doubt. It also gives us the opportunity to collaborate in a cross-sectoral initiative that unites the creative industry with youth development—an approach we believe is vital for making a lasting impact in today's complex environment.<< Objectives >>Through this project, we aimed to equip both young people and youth workers with the tools to overcome the fear of failure, a widespread and often overlooked barrier to youth development. Our primary goal was to foster resilience and build self-confidence by integrating digital storytelling and comic design into non-formal education. We hoped to create innovative, engaging learning experiences that speak to the realities of today’s youth—especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds—while also expanding the capacity of youth workers to address emotional and psychological challenges. By developing educational content, a training program, an e-learning system, and accessible online resources, we sought to provide a sustainable toolkit for ongoing empowerment. Furthermore, we aimed to promote a cultural shift in how failure is perceived: not as a setback, but as a step toward growth. Our transnational collaboration added value by combining diverse insights into a unified European solution.<< Implementation >>Throughout the project, we carried out a series of structured activities aimed at empowering youth and equipping youth workers with innovative educational tools. We began by developing a Competency Matrix through surveys and expert-led focus groups to identify key skills needed to overcome fear of failure. Based on this, we created educational content combining comic design and digital storytelling. This was followed by the design and pilot testing of a comprehensive training program for youth workers, complemented by a Train-the-Trainer LTTA in Bonn. We also created an Online Educational Resource with bite-sized learning units and video tutorials, accessible via mobile devices, to support flexible self-directed learning. Additionally, an e-learning system with self-help tools for youth was launched. Project management, quality assurance, and regular evaluations ensured all activities met high standards. Activities were inclusive, accessible, and adapted to individual learning needs, with outputs translated into multiple languages to ensure broad usability and impact.<< Results >>he FoFYC project produced several key outputs and results aimed at helping young people overcome fear of failure through comic design and digital storytelling. Core outputs included the FoFYC Handbook, a Training Program for Youth Workers, a set of Bite-Sized Educational Resources, and an interactive e-Learning Platform. These tools provided youth workers with practical, innovative methods and supported youth aged 15–21 with self-help materials tailored to their needs. Over 185 young people participated in pilot testing across five countries, showing increased emotional awareness and mindset shifts. The materials were designed to be inclusive, accessible, and adaptable for formal and non-formal settings. Results exceeded expectations in content quality and relevance, with user satisfaction ratings consistently above 4.5/5. The project also ensured sustainability through translations, digital access, and integration into partner organisations' regular activities, making its impact long-lasting and scalable across Europe.
