"<< Background >>The goal of the SHOP-@-THE-BLOCK (S@TB) project was to help emerging entrepreneurs with a small market presence expand their reach and improve visibility. This was achieved through the development of 8 hubs within the project. Many local businesses involved in S@TB were forced to close due to COVID-19 or other economic factors. By creating an innovative online community, where local entrepreneurs could offer and sell their products/services, we helped prevent them from going under. Our challenge was to create a sustainable shift toward a preventive method that met the needs of both entrepreneurs and customers while adhering to stakeholder requirements and regulations. The primary objective was to assist higher-risk start-ups in creating a joint online community to enhance their viability. With the rise of online shopping, especially during COVID-19, this trend was unlikely to change. However, small entrepreneurs faced barriers in offering their products/services online and managing logistics, a challenge the S@TB project successfully addressed.<< Objectives >>The goal of the project was to strengthen existing entrepreneurs and provide new entrepreneurial opportunities for those starting out in the labor market. The S@TB project aimed to digitally empower entrepreneurs, unite their strengths as a local community, and enhance their capacity (knowledge, skills, and growth) in entrepreneurship. Additionally, it sought to make them more resilient in the context of a pandemic, which had rapidly shifted the market for most local businesses. Staying afloat during the COVID-19 crisis was particularly challenging, especially for those with limited or no online presence in commercial terms. The socioeconomic situation at the time highlighted the need for innovative entrepreneurship development. To promote inclusion and professionalism, an efficient approach was necessary to digitally support the labor market, create new jobs, and stimulate the economy. This was the core of the S@TB project, which aligned with European employment strategies emphasizing entrepreneurship as a key element in employment policy and combating unemployment.<< Implementation >>The focus of this project was to stimulate innovative methods, particularly through the online toolbox on the website (R1) and the S@TB templates (R2). We successfully delivered on our promise: helping (starting) local entrepreneurs expand their market reach and increase their business visibility with a small market presence. This project bridged the gap between the current market, where local entrepreneurs were struggling due to larger companies with more opportunities for online shopping (especially during the COVID-19 pandemic), and the increasingly empty retail streets caused by the economic situation at that time. Furthermore, the pandemic made people less inclined to shop from afar and more interested in local commercial initiatives and the opportunities the online world offered. The S@TB project's activities were specifically focused on: • Developing and applying a masterclass program for S@TB “local community owners” (LTTA).• Creating guidelines, procedures, and research into (starting) local businesses and their regional products, and making various tools/instruments available online to stimulate and/or teach entrepreneurship skills (R1).• Establishing online entrepreneurial hubs and community formats (based on R1 research), where start-ups created pop-ups with local stakeholders, including successfully implementing pilots (R2).• Conducting a feasibility study on continuing the S@TB approach and methodology after the project period (R3). We can confirm that these goals were successfully achieved, and the project had a positive impact on the involved entrepreneurs and their future prospects.<< Results >>We have more than achieved the results as outlined at the start of the project, creating a lasting impact within the target group and their communities. Below is an overview of the outcomes realized within the S@TB project;- R1 Needs Analysis / Online Toolbox:We did a need analysis in every country and made one overall report for this (SYNTRA WEST). Next to that we designed an online toolbox, with 5 pages country specific information/learning materials. We engaged 221 individuals in the use and implementation of the online toolbox, significantly exceeding our intended impact. - R2 Hub Development:A total of 68 individuals actively contributed to the development of the hubs, resulting in 8 fully operational hubs. This surpasses our original planning significantly (which was 5 hubs in total). Next to that we also made one handbook with the S@TB methodology and use of templates for future execution. - R3 Focus Groups:31 participants contributed to focus groups, providing valuable insights and enabling further refinement of the project's feasibility study. We did a focus group activity in every country and made a focus group report afterwards. One general feasibility study report was written (CSL) including a business model canvas. For every country additionally one video was made to 'sell' the project as well as dissemination activity.- LTTA ""Local Community Owners"":We trained 16 individuals in the Netherlands and 8 in local countries, strengthening leadership within the community.- Stakeholders:Approximately 200 stakeholders were involved, achieving a broad base of support for the project.- Dissemination:Dissemination activities were executed entirely as planned, aligning with the objectives outlined with responsible partner FIP. Dissemination highlights include newsletters and face-to-face outreach, with a reach of 21,039 individuals. Total dissemination reached 88,418 people.- Multiplier Events:190 individuals participated in the multiplier events, generating a significant impact within the communities involved.- Letters of Support (LOS):We received 9 Letters of Support, leveraging additional backing to help achieve the project's future objectives. These letters were signed by entrepreneurs, business associations, and municipalities, reflecting strong support for S@TB.During the project, adjustments were made to enhance inclusivity and achieve broader results. For example, after the first year, we decided to move away from the initial goal of involving 60% female entrepreneurs to ensure equal opportunities for all participants, regardless of gender."
