The general objective of this project is capacity strengthening of graduate statistics education in Ethiopia, to contribute to a sustainable growth and an enhanced socio-economic relevance of statistical science for the labour market. This will go with two specific objectives: (1) strengthening statistics education to deliver MSc graduates who can effectively address societally and economically relevant questions from a broad range of customers in statistical consultancy; (2) strengthening PhD holders in statistics to enable them to build a research program of their own as a sustainable basis for an effective, South-owned PhD supervision. To realize the first specific objective, an intensive training with 3 teaching staff members of each of the 8 first generation Ethiopian universities will be set up. This training will involve active interactions with customers from the very beginning. It will further consist of three modules targeting a full mastery of statistical consultancy and two fundamental prerequisite concepts for it. Each module will result in the development of a new course, along with South-owned, novel teaching methodologies and open-access online course materials. The universities will include these as mandatory constituents in their MSc in Statistics curriculum. As to the second specific objective, we will set up a mentoring module to support 16 PhD holders in statistics in the development of a research program of their own. Aspects addressed in it will include personal SWOT analyses, sessions on time management, support in acquiring funding to buy research time for oneself, and mentoring advice on the setup and development of a research program of one’s own. Each such program should lead to the submission to first rank international journals of at least two good quality manuscripts per year of programmed coherence, and, at the end of the project, to the formulation of one or two home-grown PhD projects within the newly developed research programs.
