<< Background >>The Hard Topics project is a response to the growing social polarization and increasingly conflictual atmosphere in society.Youth workers, young people, and educators across various fields are witnessing this tense atmosphere on multiple levels: within groups, in educational institutions, in youth work, and most notably, in society at large. We believe that the best response to rising polarization is DIALOGUE. Through this project, we aimed to strengthen the dialogical competences of young people—as well as those of youth workers and educators—in an engaging and interactive way.Our goal was also to contribute to active citizenship and youth initiativeness. We focused our activities around shared European values, which remain one of the few starting points with broad consensus and acceptance. We sought to involve a diverse range of young people, youth workers, and organizations in our dialogical activities. However, our identified needs extended beyond youth and organizations. We also aimed to make a systemic contribution—by influencing the teaching of civic education in the partner countries.<< Objectives >>We set seven key objectives for the project:G1: Young people are able to manage potentially conflictual situations — both online and in real-life interactions — that stem from social polarization.G2: Young people gain a deeper understanding of key concepts related to civic literacy, become more resilient to disinformation, and more inclusive in their civic engagement.G3: Youth workers and youth leaders are trained to address conflicts arising from social polarization and are motivated to work for peace and mutual understanding.G4: Other educators and youth allies are equipped to address conflicts among young people that stem from increasing social polarization.G5: The youth sector is recognized as a relevant and competent stakeholder in tackling challenges related to social polarization, civic literacy, and youth initiative.G6: Spaces for dialogue are established — fostering genuine conversations among young people and others at personal, organizational, local, national, and international levels.G7: EU citizens develop a deeper understanding of the Union’s values and actively engage in promoting and upholding them.<< Implementation >>As part of the project, we carried out the following key activities:DEVELOPMENT OF TOOLS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, which included:•Creation of 10 guidelines for dialogue, serving both as a project framework and a didactic tool;•Development of the HardTopics web application, designed to invite participants with the most divergent views into dialogue;•Design of three training curricula aimed at preparing young people for meaningful dialogue.TRAINING OF YOUTH WORK PROFESSIONALS, which included:•Exploration of dialogical concepts;•Development of a handbook for working with youth on dialogue;•Creation of a training model for youth work;•Implementation of training sessions.IMPLEMENTATION OF ACTIVITIES TO STRENGTHEN DIALOGICAL COMPETENCES IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES, which included:•Delivery of dialogue training sessions for young people;•Organization of dialogue events among youth;•A campaign highlighting the importance of European values.SYSTEM-LEVEL ACTIVITIES, which included:•An initial study on the presence of dialogue in current curricula;•Recommendations for civic education, based on consultations;•Establishment of a Dialogue Network;•Organization of the project’s final conference.<< Results >>The project delivered the following key results:HardTopics Web Application – a tool for youth workers, leaders, and educators to conduct dialogue-based activities using the “opinion-opponent speed dating” method.“Hard Topics” Handbook – a resource for those working with young people, presenting the most practical dialogue concepts and methods for enhancing dialogical competences.Three Dialogue Training Programmes for Youth – 2 in-person and 1 online.Recommendations for Integrating Dialogical Approaches into formal and non-formal education.Didactic Tool: “10 Guidelines for Dialogue” – a practical resource for working with young people on dialogue.Dialogue Network – open to individuals and organizations interested in continuing work in this field.30+ Trained Facilitators – 15 trained during the main training, with more trained in later stages of the project.Youth Participation – 950 young people in dialogue trainings, and 630 in dialogue events.European Values Campaign – including materials that can be reused or adapted for future campaigns.Final Project Conference.Project Website: https://hardtopics.eu, along with a wide range of dissemination activities.
