GREENWISE: Cultivating Knowledge and Sustainability through Microgreens Farming

<< Background >>The GreenWise project was initiated to address critical challenges in sustainable farming, supply chain resilience, and access to smart farming technologies. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in supply chains, particularly in Cyprus, highlighting the urgent need for local, resilient food systems and reducing reliance on imports. GreenWise focused on two global challenges: promoting sustainable agriculture practices and cultivating a new generation of environmentally conscious entrepreneurs. It was also noted that many young people lacked opportunities to engage with sustainable farming and were unaware of agriculture’s environmental impact. As urbanisation increased, hands-on farming knowledge became less accessible, creating the need to introduce youth to tech-driven solutions.Through the collaboration of Leftover Labs, Technologos, and Smart-Agro Hub, the project aimed to combine smart farming tools with practical, engaging learning. GreenWise provided open-source, easy-to-use resources for young people, small-scale farmers, and urban growers, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and fostering innovation across Europe.<< Objectives >>Through the GreenWise project, the goal was to combine technology, education, and hands-on experience to promote sustainable agriculture. The aim was to show participants and independent learners how smart farming technologies could enhance food production, using microgreens as an accessible starting point for sustainable living. The project aspired for participants to understand the environmental impact of traditional farming and explore resource-efficient methods. By providing practical experience with smart farming tools, the goal was to demonstrate how automation and data-driven decisions improve crop growth and equip them with the necessary skills and tools. The focus was on empowering young people with practical skills through workshops and freely available online resources. The project also aimed to strengthen local food production, reduce reliance on imports, and boost supply chain resilience with small-scale, sustainable solutions.By making project materials open-source, the initiative encouraged European-wide knowledge sharing and innovation, helping participants and independent learners explore agri-tech possibilities.<< Implementation >>For the GreenWise project, three main activities were implemented to achieve our goals.Activity 1, the Microgreens Farming and Technology Workshop led by Leftover Labs, introduced participants to microgreens farming and the use of technology to optimise growth. It built a strong foundation in sustainable agriculture practices while introducing participants to basic coding skills for managing and monitoring small-scale growing systems. A real-time monitoring dashboard, APIs, code examples, and tutorials were developed and published online for long-term access.Activity 2, the Online Platform Training and Orientation led by Technologos, provided hands-on guidance on using the learning platform and interacting with environment monitoring technologies. The training and supplementary materials were made available online and on social media to allow independent, flexible learning.Activity 3, the Business Planning and Mentorship Workshop led by Smart Agro Hub, focused on business planning, marketing, financial management, and mentorship. It empowered participants to transform their microgreens projects into sustainable businesses, supporting the project’s aim of fostering entrepreneurial spirit among young people.<< Results >>The Microgreens Farming and Technology Workshop, led by Leftover Labs, introduced participants to the benefits and growth conditions of microgreens. Hands-on sessions taught hardware setup, sensor data collection, and data analysis using Raspberry Pi systems and APIs, helping participants optimise microgreens growth. All materials, including tutorials and code examples, were made available online for continued learning.Technologos led the Online Platform Training and Orientation, improving participants’ technical skills. The platform, supported by the Arduino online workshop and podcasts, enabled learners to access educational resources independently at their own pace.Smart Agro Hub organised the Business Planning and Mentorship Workshops, covering business planning, marketing strategies, and financial management. A business guide for microgreens farming in Greece was developed to support aspiring entrepreneurs. The project met all original objectives, exceeded expectations in knowledge dissemination, and strengthened participants’ practical skills in sustainable farming and entrepreneurship. Collaborative efforts ensured the project’s long-term impact and laid a strong foundation for future initiatives.
