"<< Background >>In 2018, Ligo Brusselleer was introduced to the ""Thuis in Taal"" (At Home in Language) approach by researcher Martine van der Pluijm (Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences). This acquaintance soon resulted in the integration of the approach under the name ""Welkom in de Klas"" in Ligo Brusselleer's Schools Project and a one-month job shadowing (funded within a KA1) in Rotterdam. These contacts were very inspiring for both parties on the one hand but also raised new questions around working with low-literate parents in a multilingual context. In addition, there was also a need for a more sustainable cooperation in order to share insights and good practices and to strengthen own initiatives. On the basis of the three-part question ""how to work together with low-literate parents to stimulate children's multilingual language skills"", Brussels and Rotterdam, together with the new, third partner Caritas Jeunes et Familles from Luxembourg (specialised in multilingual tools), joined forces for the ""Together Strong in Languages"" project. << Objectives >>The concrete objectives of our project were to exchange and improve good practices and methodologies on working with parents on multilingual language promotion. We wanted to strengthen the cooperation between professionals and (low-educated) parents in early and (pre-)school education and thus contribute to a language-stimulating environment for young children (focus on the age 2,5-6 years). In addition, we wanted to focus on two key learning questions: 1) How can we deal with the growing multilingual complexity of our society? How can home languages be better integrated in the cooperation between parents and schools and how we can create a good balance between home language, school language and a multilingual environment?2) How can we make a bridge between school and home? How can we offer parents tools to work at home, in the home language, towards a language-stimulating environment?By choosing participating partners from both academia and practice, we also wanted to connect theory and practice. In addition, as stated in the project description, we also intended to involve as many people as possible in our exchange, not only professionals but also students and parents themselves. << Implementation >>Seven live meetings were organised between May 2022 and April 2024. Each meeting lasted three days and was alternately organised in Brussels, Rotterdam and Betzdorf (Luxembourg). For each meeting, a delegation of at least 9 regular participants was determined, each time complemented on the spot by additional participants from the host city. The first 6 meetings consisted of a mix of interactive workshops, visits, lectures and moments of reflection. The last meeting in Brussels was filled by a large 1-day inspiration festival, open to a wide audience from professionals, students to parents.Furthermore, in addition to the programme for the regular group of participants, from the second meeting onwards, certain workshops were repeated for a larger group of colleagues or partners, such as the Brussels workshop ""The world is a book"", which was offered in both Rotterdam and Luxembourg. Moreover, parallel programmes were organised for and by new partners. For example, at both the second and last meeting in Brussels, OBIB, the umbrella organisation of Brussels libraries and partner of Ligo Brusselleer, organised a parallel programme on family literacy for Dutch partners of the ""Thuis in Taal"" approach.<< Results >>These were 2 intensive but very interesting years. Thanks to the enthusiastic collaboration between the 3 partners, every meeting was a success. The group dynamics were very good, there was a lot of desire to learn, materials and insights were widely shared and a number of inspiring practices were started immediately after the meeting. For example, the Brussels workshop ""The world is a book"" is now touring in the Netherlands and Luxembourg, ""Planting Languages"" has been integrated in an adapted version into the programm of Caritas Jeunes & Familles, methodologies from the Luxembourg ""Education Plurilingue"" have been integrated in the Schools Project of Ligo Brusselleer and the House of the Child and various materials from the Netherlands were either shared with or purchased by Brussels. An overview of the best-of activities can be found on the project website. In addition, this project also provided a lot of new contacts and a broader network for the partners. The positive dynamics created a lot of new, lasting contacts, primarily between Brussels and Dutch partners, thanks to the common language. In the meantime, brainstorming is already underway about a new collaboration under the same name of ""Together Strong in Languages""."
