<< Background >>Slovake.eu is the largest specialized e-learning platform for Slovak, launched in 2011 as one of the pioneering e-learning platforms for language-learning worldwide. Its success stems from offering courses in learners’ mother tongues, employing cutting-edge technical features, and maintaining a professional online standard. However, it was originally developed at a time when migration to Slovakia was minimal, so many lessons focus on tourism rather than meeting the immediate needs of newcomers who face challenges without adequate Slovak-language skills in everyday tasks, such as dealing with public offices or arranging essential services. In recent years, the foreign population in Slovakia has grown significantly, including an increasing number of non-EU citizens, particularly from Ukraine. Meanwhile, global developments also call for updated content reflecting modern realities and the practical requirements of migrants. To address these evolving needs, we have decided to expand and adapt slovake.eu by adding migration-oriented materials that target daily life situations. This ensures the platform remains a leading tool for learning Slovak, enabling learners to integrate smoothly into local society, promoting social inclusion.<< Objectives >>The main aim of the project was to enrich the existing slovake.eu e-learning platform with new, migration-focused materials, offering free and user-friendly access to essential Slovak language resources. Additionlly, the following objectives were defined:1. Addressing Changing Migration Trends: Developing materials that meet the practical needs of newcomers, particularly those arriving from Eastern Europe and other regions where conventional language instruction of the Slovak language may be inaccessible.2. Enhanceing Practical Language Skills: Shifting the focus from tourism-oriented content to real-life scenarios so learners gain crucial day-to-day language skills that facilitate integration, employment, and social acceptance.3. Promoting Inclusivity and Accessibility: Provision of interactive lessons in 15 languages, thereby creating learning opportunities for adult learners in rural or socio-economically challenged areas who may lack conventional language courses.4. Fostering Social Inclusion: Delivering a relevant, high-quality learning tool that is entirely free of charge, ensuring smooth language acquisition for labor migrants, family migrants, and student exchange participants alike.<< Implementation >>The project’s activities centered on redesigning the platform and developing new learning materials, as well as further dissemination of the slovake.eu platform. Content development included translating all materials into 15 languages, with transnational project meetings dedicated to the development of activities, exchange of ideas, and evaluation. Learners and teachers of the Slovak language participated in testing the platform to ensure the quality and effectiveness of the final project output. Multiplier events were organized to present the project results to key stakeholders in France, Lithuania and Slovakia. Another major focus was directly reaching the primary target group, learners of Slovak, by ensuring the information was available in relevant spaces, such as educational centers, blogs, social media, etc. Through these combined efforts, the project was successfully implemented, culminating in the completely redesigned and updated slovake.eu platform.<< Results >>A key output of the project is the fully redesigned and updated portal slovake.eu, expanding its existing courses to better meet the needs of migrants in Slovakia. The new content is available in 15 languages and incorporates improved translations of words and expressions. This preserves beginners’ motivation while guiding them through practical situations ranging from office visits to arranging mobile services. The project produced additional grammar exercises, short dialogues and socio-cultural content needed for everyday life in Slovakia and introduced missing topics, covering areas like technology, environmental issues, and global health. Clickable words and sentences linked to an integrated dictionary, and numerous pictures and recordings were added to support a richer, more intuitive learning experience. Beyond content, the platform itself was rebuilt from the ground up. This also entailed updating visual elements with nearly 1,600 new images and icons. In total, 11,445 audio files were processed, 350–400 pages of text were reviewed and refined in all supported languages, and 2,501 new exercises were created - ensuring a modern, user-friendly portal that enhances language acquisition for learners worldwide.
