<< Background >>The reasons behind the SAFER project development and implementation were several:- road safety in the EU is still not on the desired level, considering the current figures concerning n. of road deaths, obviously the EU cannot meet its target for halving the n. of deaths by 2050 (EU Road Safety Policy Framework 2021-2030)- in most EU countries, young people stand behind a large number of severe accidents, cause by reckless driving, driving under the influence, aggressive driving due to overconfidence, distracted driving and so on. Work with this group is a must if we want to change the grim statistics, because at the same time, the leading cause for children and young people mortality are road accidents. - survivors of severe traffic accidents and/or family members who have lost dear ones fall into exclusion and isolation and their voices and stories, which could have such tremendous impact on others’ behavior and attitude on the road, are silenced. We know the potential of the personal story and wanted to give this group the power to speak up, to share what they have experienced (without ego, judgement or finger pointing) and try to make sure that their own stories do not turn into the stories of their young listeners/viewers.<< Objectives >>The SAFER project aimed to:- improve the skills, knowledge base and level of civic engagement of youth workers on the topic of road safety and in particular with a focus on prevention of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs- empower and support the inclusion of physically impaired survivors of car accidents by training them as youth workers and influencers, who can affect the attitude and behavior of young drivers or young people, who are in the process of obtaining their driver's license- raise the awareness and support the adoption of safer driving practices among the group of young drivers or learner drivers, thus increasing their own level of responsibility and civic engagement.<< Implementation >>We developed a training programme on road safety, safe behavior behind wheel and in the vehicle in general, prevention of driving under the influence, understanding the consequences of such behavior, developing and conducting campaigning and awareness raising activities among young people and ultimately using the instruments provided by theatre for peer learning and changing behaviors and attitudes. We tested the training programme via training of groups of youth workers and car accident survivors as well as family members of young people who have lost their lives due to traffic accidents. We developed an OER version of the training programme where the content is available via micro learning sessions. We conducted pilot trainings delivered by the youth workers to young drivers/learners in schools, driving schools, at public road safety events and others. We developed content for and conducted a broad campaign with videos, podcasts, awareness raising workshops for students, as well as drunk goggles simulations among young drivers/learners, based on personal stories and participation of car accident survivors. The stories we collected impacted thousands of readers and viewers not only from the partner countries but far beyond. << Results >>We developed a training programme on road safety, safe behavior behind the wheel and in the vehicle in general, reaction in case of an accident, consequences (legal, financial, health and social) of driving under the influence, prevention of driving under the influence, successful campaigning (including work with challenging groups, doing driving and drunk goggle simulations) and youth work. The training programme is elaborated and available as an OER in EN, BG, SLO and GR.We collected a huge number of stories of survivors and of families who have lost young people to traffic accidents and developed interviews accessible as videos (via project website, YouTube, Facebook and Traffic police in Sofia), shorts (YouTube and Instagram), texts, podcasts and theatre dramatizations. We used these for an educational awareness raising campaign for young drivers/learners, young road offenders and delivered our messages via workshops, seminars, trainings, simulations, social media and public events. We developed a sustainability plan for the purpose of ensuring results longevity and the support of authorities and policy makers and already have post project events planned. We raised the awareness of hundreds of youth and empowered survivors.
