"<< Background >>The ISEC-ADE project was launched by an international partnership with the support of the European Union's E+ programme in response to the widening educational gap and increasing inequalities for learners on the autism spectrum and those with intellectual disabilities (ID) across Europe. For these groups, access to learning opportunities through digital technology is particularly limited. The education system is increasingly part of the digital transition, able to take advantage of the benefits and opportunities it presents. However, we tried to find a way to effectively manage the risks of the digital transition, which for our target group is segregation in educational settings particularly experienced by learners with “invisible disabilities”, such as those on the autism spectrum and those with intellectual disabilities. We addressed the main challenges that education systems face due to the lack of accessible digital tools and digital educational content, lack of methodological guidelines regarding the implementation of the digital tool for accessible and quality learning opportunities, as well as professional development opportunities for teachers as they work to provide an equitable educational experience. << Objectives >>The main objective of the project is to reduce the digital divide in education for learners with ASC and ID by: - Providing open access digital learning infrastructure (web app) accessible to learners (accessible, structured, interactive, and autism-specific educational content; enable educators, parents, and support staff to access resources, tutorials, and tools that facilitate effective teaching and learning);- Providing a platform for sharing open educational resources created with the web app (to serve as a repository for OER, thus foster a community of practice among educators across partner countries); - Creating methodological guidelines for implementation of the digital tool for accessible and quality learning opportunities (Provide clear strategies to equip educators with the knowledge to use digital tools for fostering academic skills, managing challenging behaviour, and building social communication skills); - Enhancing competences of educators by developing and delivering a master course (produce a multiplier effect through the ToT scheme; build capacity within schools, therapy centres, and other educational institutions to address the challenges of digital education for autism)<< Implementation >>The project has successfully concluded, with all planned activities completed as outlined in the original work program. Below is a detailed account of the activities carried out and their outcomes:In the initial phase of the project we implemented promotional activities and set up channels for communication and dissemination. - The project was introduced to the organisations' community and disseminated on a European level through the EPALE platform. This ensured that the project’s goals, progress, and outcomes were visible to a wider audience and engaged relevant stakeholders in the field of education.- Press Releases: National media outlets published press releases to raise awareness of the project’s progress and objectives.- Project Web-page: A dedicated project website (https://www.isec-ade.eu) was developed to centralize information and results.- Social Media Presence: The project’s dedicated Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/isecade.eu) was used to engage followers and share updates in a timely manner.- Online Updates: Progress updates were disseminated across all partners’ webpages and social media channels, ensuring consistent communication with the broader community.- Dropbox Workspace: A shared Dropbox workspace was created to facilitate collaboration and ensure seamless access to project documents for all partners.- Project Branding: The project logo and visual identity were designed and agreed upon by all partners, providing a consistent and professional representation of the project in all materials.- The name for the digital platform was agreed upon, and domains were secured: TeachSpace Web App (www.teachspace.eu) and TeachHub E-Hub (www.teachhub.eu).- Dissemination and Marketing Plans: Comprehensive dissemination and Facebook marketing plans were developed to enhance the project’s reach and visibility.R1 & R2The TeachSpace and TeachHub Web App were developed by implementing activities that follow the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) framework. In this framework we carried out requirement/ needs analysis, activities for defining requirements, design and developing activities, as well as testing/piloting activities, coordinated by the Autism Institute as the lead partner. Activities for the Development of Project Result 1Requirement analysis was the foundational stage of the project. Activities conducted during this stage included:- Focus group interviews with teachers, special educators, assistants, learners, and parents/caregivers to identify current challenges and improvement areas. A standardised protocol and template were developed for focus group interviews.- Desk research conducted by each project partners to identify general accessibility guidelines, best practices for autism and ID, and challenges in digital education for learners with autism.- Autism Institute provided templates for reporting and consolidated the findings into a comprehensive report summarising input from 10 focus groups (5 with educators and 5 with learners, parents, and carers) as well as the desk research and produce the publication 'FGD REPORT ACCESSIBLE DIGITAL LEARNING: Recommendations and Outputs for Learners with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities'The next stage focused on defining the product’s requirements, based on the findings from Stage 1. Activities included:- Developing the Software Requirements Specification (SRS) collaboratively Following this stage, the design and development of the product were carried out. Key activities included:- Developing the Design Document Specification (DDS), defining the product architecture and design approach. The development stage was implemented by technicians at Autism Institute who built the web app based on the SRS and DDS specifications.Adaptations were provided by partners to ensure local language compatibility. The final stage was testing/piloting the product, including:- Activities for engaging and coordinating users - educators and learners, creating educational content, collecting detailed feedback on usability and functionality.- Activities to resolve the identified issues were implemented by Autism Institute. Issue Resolution:Activities for the Development of Project Result 2Similarly, the methodology for development of The TeachHub included series of activities following the SDLC framework. During the planning and requirements stage, partners focused on gathering input from stakeholders to define the e-hub’s requirements. Key activities included:- Desk research and focus groups - conducted using a standardised protocol to identify state of art practices and challenges related to digital teaching resources for teachers, and collecting insights from teachers, school-based therapists, and other education professionals, on their requirements for an effective e-hub, and exploring strategies to motivate educators to engage with and contribute to the platform.- Compiling and summarising the findings - Autism Institute provided templates for reporting findings and compiled a comprehensive report the 'TeachHub - DESK RESEARCH AND NEEDS ANALYSIS REPORT' summarising input from six focus groups across partner organisations.During the defining requirements stage and the design and development stage the project team defined and documented the e-hub’s requirements, and implemented the following:- Produced Software Requirements Specification (SRS)- Produced Design Document Specification (DDS)- TeachHub was built based on the approved SRS and DDS, ensuring compatibility with local languages and user-friendly features. The final stage involved testing the e-hub to ensure it met the defined requirements:- Piloting/Testing was conducted with educators, therapists, and support staff, who provided feedback on usability and content quality. Feedback was used to refine the e-hub, addressing any issues before its official release.R3Result 3 of the project focuses on the development of an innovative pedagogical strategy, published as a Handbook titled 'Methodological Guidelines for Accessible and Quality Digital Education for Learners with Autism'. These guidelines aim to address the growing educational gap for autistic learners across Europe by equipping educators and support professionals with autism-specific and digital teaching strategies. The following section outlines the activities carried out in the development of this project result. The development of the methodological guidelines was coordinated by ShipCon in collaboration with all project partners.- Planning discussions and decisions about the content, format, and timeline for the manual. The timeline was aligned with the finalisation of the design and development of the digital app (R1) to ensure efficient use of project resources.- The content development activities were organised in two major sections. (1) Technical component that addressed the digital competence among educators, which describes the features of the app and e-hub (R1 and R2), offering step-by-step instructions supported by narratives, visuals, and video tutorials. (2) Didactic component focused on autism-specific teaching methodologies tailored to various developmental, social, and educational goals, taking into account the co-occurring intellectual impairments. - Research and data collection activities included desk research and literature surveys on methodologies for digital education for autistic learners, comping best practices and case studies at the European level, particularly those developed in response to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and incorporating expert insights from project staff with theoretical and hands-on experience.- Collaboration on drafting individual chapters of the guide, reviewing the chapters and providing feedback for revisions. - All partners adapted the English version of the manual for local users in their respective countries to ensure accessibility.R4Project Result 4 is a comprehensive Training of Trainers (ToT) course titled Accessible and Quality Digital Education for Autism. The training program addresses the need for tailored professional development for educators, special educators, and other professionals supporting autistic learners. The course leverages pedagogical strategies developed in R3, ensuring participants acquire the autism-specific and digital competences necessary for inclusive and effective education in physical, digital, and hybrid settings. The development of the ToT course was coordinated by MSSA, with active contributions from all project partners based on their expertise. It included the following activities:- Planning sessions to ensure alignment with the pedagogical strategies from R3, maximizing the integration of autism-specific methodologies.- Curriculum development structured around clear learning objectives, focusing on building autism-specific digital teaching competences and organised to support adult learning principles, ensuring the course addressed the needs of educators. - preparation of comprehensive compendium of training materials including PowerPoint presentations, training plans, annotated trainer notes, course curriculum detailing course objectives, content, and teaching strategies, evaluation Instruments, E- handouts, learner profiles- case studies.
