Blue Deal – Towards a Bluer Ocean

"<< Background >>The project addressed the often-overlooked connection between climate change and ocean protection, emphasizing the need for a ""blue change"" alongside the more commonly recognized ""green change."" Recognizing that the ocean is vital for human survival as it is responsible for producing over 50% of global oxygen, the project highlighted the ongoing threats posed by plastic pollution, human activities, and climate change. Despite political and scientific efforts under the European Green Deal, the role of youth in shaping ocean-related policies had been limited. This project tackled that gap by collecting good practices and lessons learned focused on ocean preservation, while actively engaging young people and youth workers in the identification of measures and activities towards ocean literacy. Crucially, the project bridged theory and practice by implementing selected activities at the local level, evaluating their effectiveness, and adapting them to suit diverse community needs.<< Objectives >>* To share and exchange good practices on actions to protect the ocean from climate change and pollution* To enhance ocean literacy among youth through raising awareness about pollution in the marine environment and how marine pollution affects human health* To facilitate youth participation and empowerment in decision making processes to tackle national and European environmental challenges* To establish a network of coastal-based organizations connecting the Mediterranean and the Black Sea<< Implementation >>* A research study on good practices on ocean protection at an EU level* A series of collaboratively dialogues between young people and policy makers* A Booklet of Good Practices for a Bluer Ocean* Identification and implementation of green sea and beach sports and activities* Implementation of initiatives included in the Booklet of Good Practices for a Bluer Ocean at a local level* A training course activity for young people and youth workers<< Results >>* Good practices and lessons learned at both the local and European levels in relation to ocean protection activities have been successfully identified.* A comprehensive ""Booklet for a Bluer Ocean"" has been developed to support NGOs and other stakeholders in adopting effective environmental approaches. This tool is specifically designed to engage young people in meaningful actions aimed at safeguarding marine ecosystems.* The activities outlined in the booklet were effectively implemented during the final phases of the project. These initiatives involved a diverse range of participants, including young people, NGOs, students, and adults with disabilities, offering them the opportunity to acquire valuable knowledge, skills, and understanding on how to respect and protect the ocean."
