Sustainable Transportation

<< Background >>We initiated the Sustainable Transportation project to address the skills gap in the automotive sector, driven by the European Green Deal and advances in electric, hydrogen, and autonomous vehicle technologies. Traditional education lacked focus on these areas, creating a mismatch between industry needs and graduate skills. The project also aimed to strengthen international cooperation through joint curricula, shared resources, and innovative teaching methods like digital and hybrid learning, ensuring education aligns with industry demands and supports sustainability. << Objectives >>The Sustainable Transportation project aimed to modernize and internationalize automotive engineering education to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving industry. Key objectives included addressing skills gaps, promoting sustainability, and enhancing collaboration between higher education institutions (HEIs).A major outcome was the development of a 15 ECTS study module on sustainable transportation, covering topics like vehicle design, alternative energy sources, intelligent driving systems, and circular economy concepts. This module equipped students with essential knowledge and skills for the industry.The project also focused on building educator capacity through training, peer learning, and innovative teaching methods. Collaboration among HEIs resulted in joint curriculum development, shared resources, and a digital learning platform that supported remote learning and virtual exchanges.By aligning education with industry needs and emphasizing sustainability, digitalization, and innovation, the project improved graduate employability and contributed to the development of a sustainable, globally connected automotive sector.<< Implementation >>In the Sustainable Transportation project, the following activities were implemented:Curriculum Development:Co-designed and co-developed three new course modules, each worth 5 ECTS, focusing on:Sustainable aftersales: maintenance, repair, and circular economy, Sustainable vehicle design and supply chain management, Sustainable energy sources and intelligent driving.- Created innovative training materials tailored for the new curriculum.- Established a joint training platform for hybrid learning, knowledge sharing, and virtual collaboration, including the use of VR environments like Matterport.- Organized short-term joint staff training events for 11 teachers, focusing on novel teaching methods and advanced learning environments.- Trained +200 students through some of the intensive programs and online courses, facilitating hands-on learning and international collaboration.- Fostered partnerships among participating HEIs for joint curriculum development, resource sharing, and integration of international perspectives into the study programs.- Conducted pilot implementations of the courses and digital learning platform, gathering feedback for continuous improvement.<< Results >>In the Sustainable Transportation project, the following concrete outputs and results were achieved:- Developed three 5 ECTS course modules: Sustainable aftersales Sustainable vehicle design and supply chain management, and Sustainable energy sources and intelligent driving. - Produced innovative training materials tailored to the new curricula, integrating sustainability and modern automotive technologies utilizing digital learning environments such as Matterport.- Trained 11 teachers in novel teaching methodologies and advanced learning technologies, enhancing their pedagogical skills.- Over 200 students participated in intensive programs and online courses, gaining practical and theoretical expertise in sustainable transportation.- Strengthened collaboration between HEIs through co-created curricula, shared resources, and international student and staff exchanges.- Delivered a framework for course development through IP-week as part of Guidebook.
