<< Background >>The ARCH project was initiated to address the growing need for integrating digital technologies into education, especially to enhance students' digital and cultural literacy. With the rapid development of digital tools, traditional teaching methods required modernization, particularly in the context of cultural heritage. Cultural resources often remained underused in education, despite their potential to engage students and provide a European dimension to learning. The project aimed to bridge this gap by developing a platform and educational game that combined real-world cultural heritage with digital tools. These innovations were designed to motivate students, improve their engagement, and knowledge about EU cultural heritage. Additionally, the project supported educators by providing ICT-based teaching methods, enhancing the quality of education.By the end of the project, these needs were effectively addressed. The website and online application provided access to cultural heritage content, fostering a European perspective, while the games introduced game-based learning. The project empowered educators with new teaching tools, contributing to a more dynamic and inclusive learning environment.<< Objectives >>ARCH set out to transform the educational experience for students and educators by creating a free, accessible online platform and engaging educational materials, including a digital educational game based on game-centered learning principles. Our mission was to enhance students’ knowledge of their city’s cultural heritage and the broader European context using modern digital tools. We aimed to empower students with essential technological and digital skills, facilitating an active engagement with their heritage. By integrating innovative game-based learning techniques, we sought to make education enjoyable and interactive, fostering critical skills such as problem-solving and creativity. Community building and social inclusion were also integral to our goals. We aimed to break down barriers and reduce social inequalities by making resources available online, inviting the wider community to participate in the educational journey. The target groups included educators and students across all educational levels. We provided training in ICT to enhance educators' teaching, while students were encouraged to explore online applications that blend real and virtual experiences, ultimately guiding their future study and career path.<< Implementation >>The ARCH project conducted a series of impactful activities aimed at promoting cultural heritage and enhancing educational practices through digital tools. Throughout the project, partners engaged in the following key activities:- Desk Research and Focus Groups for PR1: all partners carried out desk research to explore cultural heritage in their respective countries and its representation in school curricula. Additionally, focus groups were held with teachers and professors to understand their teaching methods and curriculum development. This collaborative effort provided a solid foundation for the creation of the PR1 application. Partners then selected four cities and two significant monuments per country, conducting thorough research to gather essential information about these cultural sites. Input from teachers during the focus groups influenced the selection process, allowing partners to consider what educators typically teach and their desires for incorporating new sites into the curriculum. Concurrently, partners developed the content for the project website.- Project Result 2 Report Creation: A comprehensive report regarding Interactive Educational Games for Elementary School Children was developed. This report outlined the objectives and desired outcomes of the ARCH educational games, the presence of digital games in elementary schools across partner countries, and the methodologies and interaction mechanics used in game development. Each partner contributed by researching local educational contexts, which set a theoretical basis for the games’ development.- Game Development and Piloting: A key outcome of PR2 was the selection of two cities per country to be included in an interactive card game. After the game was developed, a piloting phase was conducted in each country with professor, teachers, educators involvement, culminating in a national report evaluating the piloting experience.- Creation of the PR3 Guide: All these collective experiences informed the compilation of the PR3 guide, which includes valuable insights on gamification strategies. The guide features practical examples and recommendations for educators on implementing modern game-based learning techniques in their teaching practices.- Dissemination Activities: Throughout the project, all partners produced a variety of dissemination materials, including videos, brochures, articles, and social media posts to promote the project's objectives and outcomes effectively. In total, four multiplier events were carried out to further enhance project visibility: two events in Italy, one in Spain, and one in Greece. These activities not only facilitated knowledge exchange among participants but also strengthened community ties by engaging a wide range of stakeholders in conversations about cultural heritage and innovative educational technologies.<< Results >>The ARCH project produced several key outputs and results that significantly enhanced cultural heritage education and digital literacy among students and educators. These outcomes were achieved through the collaborative efforts of all partners, who worked together to reach these outputs through monthly meetings and continuous feedback sessions. Here are the main outcomes:1. Application for mobile devices of digital browsing platform and presentation of information of cultural points of interest (PR1): The project successfully developed a mobile application that serves as a digital browsing platform for cultural points of interest, available exclusively on the project website: https://arch-erasmusproject.eu/. The app is translated into all partner languages and includes links to the locations of the monuments, facilitating easy access for users. To further support dissemination, brochures featuring augmented reality elements were created, and all relevant content is collected on the project website, which is also accessible in all partner languages. The application was informed by comprehensive national reports developed through collaboration among partners, ensuring that the content accurately reflects cultural heritage teachings within each country.2. Interactive educational game for elementary school children (PR2): PR2 involves the development of digital educational games, specifically one for each partner country: Spain, Cyprus, Greece, and Italy. These games are designed based on game-centered learning principles to enhance students’ literacy skills while supporting their cultural and digital literacy. The final products consist of four standalone applications that operate in an Android environment, fully compatible with smartphones and tablets. Each game incorporates a card game format, including interactivity through challenges, cooperation, feedback, and scoring mechanisms. The development process included three phases:Phase 1. involved desk research and focus groups with elementary education teachers to define the educational objectives and desired behaviors of the games. This process led to the creation of national reports summarizing the findings.Phase 2. focused on content development, where partners utilized a predefined template and translated materials into all partner languages for integration into the games.Phase 3. included piloting and testing of the games, with questionnaires distributed to educators to gather feedback on content, educational impact, and user experience. This feedback was compiled into national reports, leading to the finalization of the games based on the recommendations received. The ARCH games are easily accessible to users through the Google Play Store and can also be downloaded from the project website:Greece: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ARCH.ARCHGreeceCyprus: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ARCH.ARCHCyprusItaly: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ARCH.ARCHItalySpain : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ARCH.ARCHSpain Additional downloads are available on the official website: https://arch-erasmusproject.eu/game/- Guide to the application of modern game-based learning techniques in secondary education (PR3): A comprehensive guide has been produced, detailing the application of modern game-based learning techniques in educational settings.
